The fact that I'm writing a review for this property makes me sad because it means we're no longer in Kyoto enjoying this lovely machiya. We were first-time travelers to Japan...my husband, myself and my sister...visiting our brother and his wife and we had the best time! The machiya was extremely comfortable for three adults. We like to travel light so the fact that there was a washer/dryer was a plus. The bed and futon were very comfortable and, although we didn't make dinner, the kitchen and dining area allowed us to enjoy breakfast each morning before heading out for our next adventure. There is only one bathroom but this wasn't a problem for us at all as everything is separate and private so we were able to get ready at the same time. The machiya is centrally located in Gion on a quiet street and we were able to see many temples and shrines on foot: Kiyomizu-Dera Temple; Kenninji Temple; and Yasaka Jinja Shrine. The machiya also allowed us to feel a part of the local culture...even running into Curtis at the local grocery store! We will return to Japan one day and when we come to Kyoto, we hope Curtis is still sharing this wonderful place with visitors, allowing them to experience a piece of local, Kyoto history.
