At Home in Rome

5 of 5
In Dec. 2014 the University administration, where I work, arranged for me to travel to Rome and insure the safe return of our study abroad students. The assignment was sweetened by the opportunity to have my wife accompany me. The university made all the arrangements for our travel and accommodations. I was given a choice of apartments from among four options. I immediately delegated that choice to my wife. I am happy to report that she chose wisely. We had the pleasure of spending ten fabulous days in a beautiful second floor apartment in Trastevere. Trastevere is the 13th rione of Rome, on the west bank of the Tiber, south of Vatican City. Its name comes from the Latin Trans Tiberim, meaning literally "beyond the Tiber". I doubt that there is a more charming medieval neighborhood on the planet. I would encourage all visitors to Italy to experience Trastevere. Our experience was significantly enriched by our beautiful second floor apartment. We had a spacious bedroom with ample closet space and large dresser, with plenty of drawers. The bathroom was small but quite adequate. The kitchen was complete with all appliances, coffee maker and tea pot. The living room, with TV, could seat 10 people. Perhaps, most important, the apartment was equipped with wifi. Personally, this was a huge benefit for me, as I received over 100 scholarship essays, from potential students, that needed to be read and evaluated prior to my return. This became my late night and early morning activity. Our landlady was a most accommodating and welcoming host. She made certain that the apartment was perfect in every way. Meeting and getting to know her was the “icing on the cake” and helped to make the experience special in every way. We will miss our precious apartment and incredible experience. But, the fond memories will last a life time. Arrivederci ROMA!
