Beautiful apartment on a canal in a great area

4 of 5
We really enjoyed our short stay at this apartment. The apartment is at the intersection of two canals, with beautiful older Venetian buildings across from it. It’s on a route used by a company of gondoliers and water taxis, so there was almost always someone going by. I’d say probably 1 out of every 10 boats had a guitar, opera singer, or some other kind of musician. We were really delighted by this! However, if you prefer an absolutely quiet apartment, this may not be the best place for you since their beautiful music permeated the apartment from morning to evening. Actually, if you like absolute quiet the whole of Venice may not be the best place for you until about 9PM at night. The apartment is located behind the Teatro La Fenice, and only a few blocks from a few great restaurants. We loved Rosa Rossa and Osteria Assassini. There’s also a nice supermarket about 5 min walk away, which is unusual for Venice. Perhaps the best thing about it, though, is that it’s about 500m from Piazza San Marco and all the high end shops. So with a 5 min walk, you’re in the heart of the touristy areas or back in a quiet residential area. The only two suggestions I would offer is regarding the wifi access there and arriving at the apartment the first time. During our visit, they only had a “hotspot” device with 3G access. Often times this dropped its connection, and it had a relatively poor range, such that you had to be within about 3 meters of it to get a good connection. Matters were made worse when we had 4 people connect to it at once, and try to check their e-mails. Streaming video or having a Skype call, even with 1 person, is out of the question. Investing in better internet, especially for such a large and nice apartment, would be a great improvement. Secondly, Venice is an infamously confusing city. While this is part of its special charm, dragging your suitcases over the bridges while you’re tired, as you attempt to find your way to the apartment the first time, is really rough. The apartment’s agent, Francesca should offer a meet and greet service with water taxi at the train station to ease this transition. I know we would’ve happily paid a little extra for this. Alternatively, if she would’ve even met us at the St. Mark’s vaporetto pier, that would’ve been nice. Still, these things aside, this apartment is beautiful, well located, comfortable, quite large for 4 people, and highly recommended.
