Peaceful Country Retreat

5 of 5
Looking for a peaceful retreat located amidst the farmland of Umbria? Casa Napoletano is close to perfect. The pool is large and clean. The wood pizza oven works like a dream. Enough wood is provided to allow for a week's worth (and more) of alfresco cooking. The screens on all windows and doors are a rarity in Europe. It is possible to leave the windows open at night to enjoy the sweet country air and wake up to the sound of pheasants in the morning. The outdoor furniture and patios are high end and in excellent shape. The photos do not do the interiors proper justice. The entire villa is constructed and decorated with care and craftsmanship. The upholstered sofas and chairs are comfortable and new. The beds, with the exception one of the downstairs mattresses, are new and spotless. It might be time to replace the downstairs mattress? Excellent hot water supply, beautiful bathrooms and fixtures, lovely linens, abundant supply of towels. No stemware wine glasses were provided as wine is commonly sipped out of small glasses at home. We asked where we might find stemware and Michael, the wonderful owner, had a set delivered to the house the next day. He is one of the easiest and most accommodating owners we have ever encountered in 30 years of renting homes in Western Europe. Franco and Anna are caretakers for the villa. They are warm, lovely and not at all intrusive. Communication was fine even with our very limited grasp of the Italian language. Folks should give consideration to the location of the villa. Michael honestly describes the nearest town as "a typical working village". Umbertide is indeed a place where Italians live and work. The town wouldn't qualify for "prettiest villages in Italy" status. However, the town has an excellent COOP market and another very inexpensive suoermarket. The town is also located next to the E motorway providing quick access to all the Tuscan and Umbrian sights. The surrounding hills are covered with olive trees, forest, pastures, small farms and walking roads. The villa is a 5 minute drive to town but located in an absolutely quiet and peaceful setting. The surrounding area is a nice relief from the glossy and sometimes busy Tuscany region. This undiscovered pocket of Umbria seems to be ready to become a serious holiday destination. Don't miss the beautiful town of Montone and the excellent restaurant Erba Luna perched on the edge of the village. Nearby Gubbio is not to be missed.

Stunning Accommodations and Perfect for Gathering and Exploring

5 of 5
We just returned from ten glorious days at Poggio Verde and exploring the area. I wasn't sure how much there would be to do and see nearby but in those ten days we didn't come close to seeing all there is in the area. Our whole party (14 friends in and out at various times) felt that we needed to come back as soon as possible not only for the things to do but the wonderful ambiance of the villa and grounds, the beautiful kitchen (we love to cook!) and of course the time with friends. Staying in this villa is like being transported back to the 19th century. The recent renovations (which were really more of a restoration) were remarkably in keeping with the original villa. The furnishings are beautiful and from the period but the modern conveniences are all there. There is an informal table in the kitchen area that became our gathering place when we weren't outside. The covered patio outside the kitchen is ideal for meals when it's warm enough, and the view from there is stunning. The formal dining room is warm and just lovely. We enjoyed extended dinner times there. The views from the upstairs windows is just beautiful, especially at night when the lights in the distance twinkle. We like to cook and there is an excellent supermarket 5 minutes away so we had most of our meals at home. We did try to get to Fumagalli, as often as we could for a cappuccino and "brioche" (croissant) and pick up some bread or one of their beautiful AND tasty desserts. We went to a couple restaurants and enjoyed the spots we visited. We look forward to checking out more of the good spots nearby on future visits. There are ping pong and foosball and badminton and croquet and I believe a bocce set is in the works. I can't say enough positive things about this very special place. I enthusiastically recommend it for groups of four couples, and one of our party was particularly excited about the idea of coming back with a group of girlfriends for some Italian cooking lessons or painting or touring other grand villas in the vicinity. Groups who like to walk could take hikes in the mountains above Lecco or Como. And of course a day of shopping in Milan is always a possibility. A car is definitely needed, but it's possible to drive the 15 minutes to Merate and park the car(s) and take the train into Milan (35 minutes) or up to Switzerland (an hour or two depending on how far you want to go), or over to Verona or Venice, or down to Florence (under 2 hours!).

Paradise in Calabria

5 of 5
Villarosa is located in a beautiful setting. There were 5 of us that stayed in this Villa and it was very comfortable and well equipped. We needed to call Marco as the water in the washer was not draining and he came within 5 minutes to attend to the washer and fixed it.He was very friendly and told us to call anytime if we needed anything. We enjoyed nightly drinks on the patio balcony. The town of Gerace is gorgeous and the people are very friendly. The restaurant "A SEQUELLA" is a must when visiting Gerace. Our only regret is that we wish that we would have had more time to enjoy the Villa as we would leave each morning to explore the different towns in Calabria. We will be back!
