A Retreat from the Ordinary

5 of 5
Beginning with the drive up the hill through the olive orchard my senses opened up to the splendor of the setting. Stunning! Everything about Campitino da Leonida appealed to my aesthetic sensibilities; well furnished and functional, yet not fussy. Having access to music, a tasteful CD collection, was a plus. Paola , the house manager, completed the perfect package with her excellent service. I woke up each morning in my Luca bedroom to a gorgeous view of the hills and valley; birds singing, air fresh and earthy. I would soon be enjoying an espresso on the terrace. Arriving at Leonida I was expecting to help with the harvest of olives for the production of Leonida Olive Oil. But the trees had produced no olives due to a rare infestation in this organically managed orchard, so move to plan B. Jake, the orchard manger, proposed learning to prune the interior of each tree in preparation of the spring pruning. Under his patient and charming guidance, I found myself climbing olive trees, pruning shears and saw on my belt, enhancing the desirable "umbrella" growth pattern of the branches. Satisfying and I might add thrilling, I contributed to this process, followed by gathering and burning the piles of the cuttings. Jake's guidance and encouragement laid the foundation for this hands on experience. Climbing, cutting, gathering, burning...no, I didn't pick olives, but I did experience the satisfaction of feeling connected to the earth and spirit of place. Food is a critical element of the "Italian vacation" and my palate was not disappointed. The local cuisine provided options to cooking. As easy as walking up the hill to the village pizzeria or a drive down the hill to Anita Locanda Di Sesto, offering superb fare. Delicious meals prepared in the Luca kitchen were shared on the terrace and would include fruit and vegetables from the garden; the main course from the local meat market and grocery stores down the hill. My favorite: we were lucky to have a couple of meals prepared for us using the wood oven in the Luca kitchen. Scrumptious! whether it was lunch or a late dinner, we would linger over our food and wine in the Italian tradition, enjoying the view of the hillside spotted with clusters of classic Italian villages. In the evening we could see the glistening city lights below, the stars and moon above. Whether relaxing on the terrace, hiking the hills of the olive orchard, or exploring the village, Leonida provided the perfec

Beautiful property

5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at La Casa Dorata, Via Santa Lucia. The property was outstanding and all the facilities were of the best quality. We would highly recommend this property. Debora del Sonno and her staff were just so good to us and did all they could to make sure our holiday was great. Thank you so much.

Fantastic apartment

5 of 5
We spent one week staying in Casa La Delizia in the lovely town of Lucca. Lucca was a great base -we easily travelled by either bus or train to Florence, Pisa and the Cinque Terre. The apartment itself was very well equipped, very comfortable and very clean. We all felt at home there with easily enough space for two teenagers and two adults. The little terrace was lovely to sit out on and enjoy a coffee or glass of wine. Eating in Lucca was sensational and the kitchen in the apartment was very well equipped for those nights when we decided to prepare our own dinner. I would very happily recommend this apartment.
