Home Away From Home

We stayed at Sassicaia, one of several beautiful properties of Il Fontanaro. Sassiciaia is a country villa with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, fully furnished, complete with washer and dryer. It is spaciaous, clean and charmingly decorated with all the amenities of home to relax and enjoy yourself. Located on the edge of the quaint town of Paciano, it is very convenient to take day trips to Cortona, Montepulciano, Assisi, Chiusi, and many more charming walled and hill towns in the area. The owners and operators of Il Fontanaro, Lucia and daughter Alina, are gracious hosts who welcome you with open arms to their home. We were invited to share several meals, naturally with their wine, and many stories as you feel a part of the family. Alina, made sure our villa was stocked with snacks and the fixings for fresh country breakfasts when we arrived. The villa was clean and charmingly decorated with all the amenities of home. If you are visiting during the grape and olive oil harvest, you may delightfully participate in the picking in their vineyard and grove and enjoy the local festivities. Alina & Lucia have many recommendations to restaurants, suggestions to local activities of the surrounding towns to make your stay exciting and authentically Italian. I would recommend signing-up for one of their slow cooking classes where all the ingredients come from Lucia's bountiful organic garden After learning to make the decadent Caprese Torta, a chocolate flourless cake, this is now one of my favorite new desserts to bake. Try to stay 5-7 days to truly enjoy the local flavor and culture of the Tuscany and Umbria regions. Our stay was one of the memorable hightlights of our first, and not the last, trips to Italy. We will definitely return soon to Fontanaro. I know you will not be disappointed should you choose to stay at any one of their properties.

leccino is great home and location

The fruit and vegetable organic garden, the wineyard, the winery and olive mill, the big swimming pool, all details to make a magic holiday. Best of all when the host did a pizza from the bread oven for all of us! But the really the best is the cooking class and farm experience. Also the wine cellar is huge, we had great wines during our week. In the orning we also ad organic eggs and home made cake and coffee from the owner We have to be back.

Paciano, Home away from home!

5 of 5
My husband Brian and I had an amazing opportunity to spend our honeymoon in the beautiful country of Italy and we had such an unforgettable time! First, we started off with a few days in Venice then we hopped in our little Fiat Panda rental for a 4 hour road trip to the lovely city of Paciano, Umbria. Paciano was by far our favorite place to stay. It is surrounded with countryside full of rolling hills with vineyards and olive groves, as well as fields of sunflowers and poppies. We spent 10 marvelous days in this quiet, cute walled city which was so fun to walk around and explore, as well as living among the locals with no touristy distractions. When we first arrived we were greeted by a english speaking neighbor who helped us get settled in to our lovely vacation rental and was available to us if ever we needed anything or had questions. The rental is upstairs, has 2 cute bedrooms, 1 with 2 twin beds, and 1 with a large bed. There is also an upstairs loft area, 1 bathroom, a spacious living room with pull out couch bed, cute little dinning area, and lovely views of the city streets. It felt like home away from home - relaxing, safe and a place you love being. On days when we weren't off on an adventure, we loved opening the windows and listening to the quiet, the singing of the locals or enjoying the daily life within this town. We were also able to do laundry, cook at home, watch some movies and play games. The property was clean and well taken care of by the owner/property managers and we would definitely recommend staying here to all of our friends, family and acquaintances wanting to enjoy an Italian vacation . There is a bar/cafe, a little grocery, a butcher, pharmacy and a few restaurants within the walls, and the people are very friendly. One of our favorite things about this place is how central it is to many surrounding cities/attractions that we wanted to visit such as Panicale, Lake Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago, Assisi, Sienna, Montopulchiano, Pienza, and Orvieto. They were all very easy to get to, and they vary from 5 - 20 minutes drive. Others took a little longer such as Florence, where we took an hour/hour and a half train ride for a lovely day trip. Paciano also had events within and around the city. We enjoyed a blues/jazz concert in the Piazza one evening. Another night we learned of fireworks/festival right down the road! Our last 3 days we spent in Rome (a 4 hr drive) but we missed Paciano! We hope to go back one day!
