Stunning Accommodations and Perfect for Gathering and Exploring

5 of 5
We just returned from ten glorious days at Poggio Verde and exploring the area. I wasn't sure how much there would be to do and see nearby but in those ten days we didn't come close to seeing all there is in the area. Our whole party (14 friends in and out at various times) felt that we needed to come back as soon as possible not only for the things to do but the wonderful ambiance of the villa and grounds, the beautiful kitchen (we love to cook!) and of course the time with friends. Staying in this villa is like being transported back to the 19th century. The recent renovations (which were really more of a restoration) were remarkably in keeping with the original villa. The furnishings are beautiful and from the period but the modern conveniences are all there. There is an informal table in the kitchen area that became our gathering place when we weren't outside. The covered patio outside the kitchen is ideal for meals when it's warm enough, and the view from there is stunning. The formal dining room is warm and just lovely. We enjoyed extended dinner times there. The views from the upstairs windows is just beautiful, especially at night when the lights in the distance twinkle. We like to cook and there is an excellent supermarket 5 minutes away so we had most of our meals at home. We did try to get to Fumagalli, as often as we could for a cappuccino and "brioche" (croissant) and pick up some bread or one of their beautiful AND tasty desserts. We went to a couple restaurants and enjoyed the spots we visited. We look forward to checking out more of the good spots nearby on future visits. There are ping pong and foosball and badminton and croquet and I believe a bocce set is in the works. I can't say enough positive things about this very special place. I enthusiastically recommend it for groups of four couples, and one of our party was particularly excited about the idea of coming back with a group of girlfriends for some Italian cooking lessons or painting or touring other grand villas in the vicinity. Groups who like to walk could take hikes in the mountains above Lecco or Como. And of course a day of shopping in Milan is always a possibility. A car is definitely needed, but it's possible to drive the 15 minutes to Merate and park the car(s) and take the train into Milan (35 minutes) or up to Switzerland (an hour or two depending on how far you want to go), or over to Verona or Venice, or down to Florence (under 2 hours!).

Stunning Views of the Charm of Italy!

4 of 5
After hearing so much about the beauty of Lake Como, I knew I had to visit it! I found Samuel and Mariam's property on HomeAway and was immediately captivated by the stunning view from the unit. As a photographer, I knew I had to stay at this picturesque location. Samuel and Mariam were excellent in keeping in touch with me and even sent me a very detailed digital welcome packet filled with tips and things to do during my stay. As I arrived in Como, I was in contact with the property manager David who kept in touch until I arrived. I did hop on the wrong ferry; instead of taking the express one, I took the local which resulted in about 2 hours of travel until I got to the proper stop. When I arrived I met David who took me to the unit. If you don't have a car, getting to the unit it quite the hike. It's on a sort of hill so to get all the way up to the unit, the road winds a bit and it's pretty tiring when you are carrying everything. The building does not have an elevator but it was only a few short stairs to get to the unit. The apartment was very clean! The first thing you notice, of course, is the amazing view you can see from the living and bedroom. The unit was very spacious, well lit, and felt very safe. The only thing was, it was a bit outdated. Also, the bed in the main bedroom is very low but the view made up for it. The location was the best part. You can easily travel to the three main areas of attraction; Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna. The local restaurants had great food and views. I certainly enjoyed my stay in Lake Como and will never forget the beautiful view the apartment offered!

Beautiful Villa Gabriella...perfectly cozy

4 of 5
We loved our stay at Villa Gabriella. It is beautifully done, perfectly clean, comfortable and homey. The views are stupendous. We loved having breakfast and dinner on the balcony. We would recommend it as a charming place to stay on Lake Como. We found the parking to be a challenge until we finally stopped trying to park on the road near the villa, and just parked in the car park down the hill a bit. We loved the stone walk ways leading up to the old church and down to the Lake. They are beautiful, yet steep. We did grow weary of managing the narrow, winding and busy roads between the villa and Bellagio. But, that is part of the charm of being at Lake Como.
