Rustic and beautiful, a magical place

5 of 5
We are Copa "frequent flyers" and it has never disappointed. Our first impression was how charming the place was. A cottage high on the hill overlooking the fortress of Castig. d. Fiorentino. Such a change from the apartments we'd enjoyed in Rome. A little more rustic, a little more European, a little more adventurous. And as it turned out, a great decision. For Americans, the radiators may take a little getting used to - they don't provide the kind of heat we're used to, but they do manage to warm the place eventually. There are plenty of comforters and throws to wrap yourself in while waiting by the fire. The kitchen may not look like it delivers, but Tierney's a gourmet cook and has provided everything you'll need to prepare a world-class Tuscan dinner - especially with the notes she provides about where to shop. Besides, when you can start your day with an espresso in the sun on the terrace, and end it with a bottle of delicious Tuscan wine by the fire, who cares about counterspace. If you easily get seasick, take a Dramamine before leaving the Village for the house. Lots of switchbacks, but the scenery is breathtaking. The house is furnished with a wonderful combination of antique Tuscan finds and modern Ikea-esque amenities. The antique beds are deep and comfortable. We never slept so well. The modern bathrooms are more than ample - especially by Italian standards. Great hardware, great tiles. Overall, the house is a solid Tuscan farmhouse with style. About things to do while you're there - Tierney's left a binder with all sorts of brochures and suggestions. On our first visit, we just hung out and hiked - looking for Etruscan artifacts that are rumored to be all over the area, and wild asparagus. Eventually, we ventured into the towns and markets. Anghiari, Arezzo, and Cortona have wonderful restaurants, and Marco, the wine merchant in Cortona is a great resource. And of course, the castle in C di F. Pizza at La Focce just down the road is a must - their real treat is karaoke night. - Jan & David B, Chicago
