A Truly Calabrian Experience

5 of 5
We were at this beautiful apartment to explore Calabria and Sicily and it was very hard to leave. The apartment is exactly as shown and very clean. The kitchen with its French Corner is such a joy to explore and just makes you want to visit the South of France. There are so many items from around Italy and also from around the world as the owner travels a lot and really makes the apartment very unique. The information that the owner provides is very useful after the reservation and it really provides everything needed for a comfortable stay to explore Calabria. The recommendations for restaurants and especially for Tartufo was simply great and we feel everyone should try Tartufo at least once during a visit to Calabria. We definitely recommend this apartment to anyone looking to stay in Calabria and hope to visit again soon.

A great place to visit

My husband and I have never been to Calabria, although we have been to Italy several times. We were trying to get away from the Toronto winter and wanted to stay someplace that was warm (at least warmer than Toronto!). We love Italy so we looked for possible places to stay in Southern Italy. That's how we found Villa Rosa. We found the villa to be very much like the description written about it. The Villa is beautifully located in the mountains and has incredible views. It is also well situated for for day trips that allow you to discover this beautiful region. Being here in winter is quite different from the summer. Much quieter and some places are closed for the winter. We found the Calabrese to be friendly and accommodating, always welcoming and doing their best to understand us when no on spoke English. We made some wonderful friends here that we hope to keep forever! There are two cities very close to the Villa. One is Gerace which is a beautiful ancient city. It has won the regional competition for best city in Calabria and is competing for the best city in Italy, so don't miss seeing it if you're around these parts. The other city is Locri...now Locri is a bit of a different story. Not beautiful but full of history and intrigue. We stayed at Villa Rosa for 3 months so there were a couple of things that happened but were looked after for us immediately. The Villa is very clean and over all well maintained. We had local people looking after us and they provided excellent customer service. If you're coming to Calabria, I would highly recommend staying at Vill Rosa.

A true gem. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Palazzo Pizzo. The location of the apartment is perfect—easy walking distance to the main square, restaurants and marina, but very quiet and private-- it feels a world away. Unlike many vacation rentals, this apartment is actually lovelier in reality than in the photos. There are world class views from the private terrace, the kitchen and even the bathroom. Angelo was the perfect host and guide, showing us all the highlights (including the very important tips on where to park!), pointing out the best restaurants, shops and cafes. After we unloaded the luggage, Angelo hopped in the car with us and guided us through the narrowest streets we have yet seen in Italy, which while still a bit hair-raising was far better than us trying to sort it out on our own. (By the end of our stay, we had mastered the routes in and out of town—as Angelo calmly assured us we would.) Both he and Tonino went out of their way to be sure everything was just right for our stay. Pizzo was a great introduction for us to the Calabrian coast. As Californians, we are spoiled for beautiful sandy beaches, but Pizzo and environs did not disappoint. Unfortunately, as we were there in March, the weather was not quite warm enough for us to take full advantage and we hope to come back again in early summer or fall. In the three days we spent in Pizzo, we had the best seafood ever. We highly recommend La Lampara, where Joseph and his brother Paolo prepared delicious fresh dishes, including the local pasta, fileja, with clams and mussels in a light tomato broth and a mixed seafood grill. Both speak excellent English, and were happy to guide our choices and prepare things to our taste. After visiting the Monday market in Tropea (we were told it would be pretty quiet there in the off season—if so, I’d hate to see it in summer—it was a huge market with just about everything imaginable—and filled with shoppers) we wanted to get away from the crowds so we headed to Vibo Marina for lunch. From the moment we were greeted by the maitre de Franco until the complimentary glass of sweet wine, lunch at Lapprodo was an amazing experience—highly recommended. We can easily understand why it has a Michelin star; the surprise was how warm and friendly the welcome.
