Cozy Cabin for Winter Adventures

5 of 5
We enjoyed our stay in the cabin, although it was an adventure to get to with a foot of snow on the ground! It was a lovely place to stay, with lots of beds even though we were only a family of four staying. Having a pack n play/crib available for our 6 month old was fantastic, and our three year old loved having a whole double bed and bedroom to herself, and playing upstairs in the loft. Everything was well maintained and clean, and it was a great location to Gullfoss and Geysir, and to the Golden Circle attractions. If coming in the winter and there is snow on the ground a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended/required. We arrived the day after a big snow and the winds whipped enough snow around that we had to wait for the plow to come around the next morning before we could get out (even with a 4x4 Suzuki). The owners were very nice and helpful when we were driving around in the dark trying to decipher the road names and signs, and were nice enough to be waiting at the cabin for us to arrive, even though we wound up taking 2 hours longer than anticipated due to a road closure from the blowing snow. All in all we had a lovely stay and enjoyed our time at the cabin! It would be an absolutely perfect place for the summertime, and it was great for winter with beautiful views of the mountains and the northern lights (just with the caveat of being a bit adventurous to get to if its snowy!)

A MEMORABLE STAY

5 of 5
This is so pretty and nice house and a good location. I liked staying there it is so relaxing and cosy inside and outside sitting on the veranda with a beautiful view. If I visit Iceland again which im sure I will, I will definitely come to Laugarvatn again.

Excellent cottage and very helpful owner

5 of 5
My family of 4 stayed for a week in Hilmar's nice cottage in December 2014. Prior to our trip, Hilmar responded swiftly to my queries, provided very good travel tips, and even help me negotiate with a car rental company for better prices as he knew this was my first trip to Iceland. Hilmar met us at the airport where I drove following his car to the cottage. On the way, as he knew we would be ravenous after our flight as well as an expected bad weather the next day, he stopped by a supermarket where he waited for us patiently while we picked up some groceries for the next few days. Upon arrival at the cottage, we were amazed with the how well kept cottage was. Northern Lights were also beginning to show when we arrived. In fact, we were fortunate to view Northern Lights from this cottage almost every night. Hilmar provided us with a mobile phone as well to make calls to him. This was helpful because we called Hilmar and obtained good advices to maximize our stay in Iceland, when deep snowfall paralyzed and closed off Reykavik for two separate days during our stay. Location of cottage provided easy access to Golden Circle sights including Kerio. We shopped for groceries in Selfoss, a 15-20 min drive from the cottage. Cottage was warm and cozy, while high winds bellow outside the cottage with temperatures between 0 to -9 degrees Celsius. Hilmar also handed us a shovel in case our 4x4 rented vehicle required, which came in handy. We also catered for a guided Blue Ice Cave tour during our stay, which turned out to be a highlight of our tour in Iceland. Upon our day of departure, due to the unprecedented deep snowfall in Iceland in mid December 2014, Hilmar and his friend, Ingolf, drove a truck to pick us with luggage from the cottage to our 4x4 car. This helped us avoid being stranded in deep snow as an inexperienced deep snow driver. And to further avoid us losing our way to the airport in the dark (few day light hours in winter), Hilmar and his friend had us followed their truck to show us almost all the way to the airport. Truly Icelandic Hospitality! My family was very fortunate to meet sincere people like Hilmar and his friend. I highly recommend this cottage. Thank you so much, Hilmar!
