Convenient & Quiet Apartment in Reykjavik

5 of 5
This apartment is a renovated basement unit in a private house in a quiet residential section of northwest Reykjavik. The owners are husband and wife, Pall and Dagrun, two of the nicest people you are likely to meet in Iceland. Pall, who also runs an outdoor guide business, provided welcome recommendations for day-trips into the county and for many of the “must-see” tourist attractions. Dagrun generously offered to wash and dry our laundry at their house, when we found the dryer listed with the apartment had been removed for repairs. They also provided us additional towels to take to the swimming pool, which save us the $5 USD rental fee. Pall and Dagrun both have professional day-jobs and were helpful in describing the business climate in Iceland and some of the cultural norms. The apartment has a well equipped kitchen, with dishwasher, which we used mostly for breakfast, because we were traveling almost every day. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with 2 singles. It seems ideal for a family with 2 kids, but it worked fine for 4 adults who have previously traveled together. Having unlimited hot water in the shower for everyone is a nice Icelandic benefit. The apartment is located a 5- minute walk from a bakery (good for breakfast pastry or sandwiches) and 2 supermarkets; 10-minute walk from the nearest thermally heated swimming pool (Vesturbaejarlaug); and 15-20 minutes to most of the Reykjavik business area. If you plan to rent a car, Pall and Dagrun offer their guests a 5-seat SUV for $99 USD /day (as of May 2014) with a GPS and you can pick the days you want to use it. This is a Great Deal if you comparison shop. This is not an off-road vehicle, but the all-wheel drive is nice in the rain and on gravel roads. If you are planning to drive off-road in a rental vehicle, I recommend you visit the web site http://icelandreview.com and search for “off-road fine” to decide if it’s worth the risk. We would certainly recommend this apartment because of the owners and its location.

All you would want

5 of 5
We stayed as a family with 2 little kids in the family room for about a week...and had a very good time in Harbourfront and Iceland. Room was clean and had more than we expected like milk, cereal and coffee. Iceland is more expensive then europe or the usa, but staying here it became more reasonable because we were able to prepare some sandwiches or breafasts there...which did cost otherwise easily 10 euros x person. the guestbook had lots of positive reviews,..dont know why nobody writes anything here... but definitely come back again, thanks sirry!

At home in Reykjavik

5 of 5
We spent an absolutely delightful week staying at Gudrun & Þór's house! It is pristine, extremely cosy, happy and serene. It is a free-standing building separate from the owner's house, inside the green inner yard; so it is very quiet and private. It was perfect in size for our family -- two adults and a child; it would be equally good for a family with two children; it could also in principle accomodate two couples. The kitchen is equipped with everything necessary to cook at home -- from cookware to oils and spices. This proved to be very important given the price of Reykjavik's restaurants; and, in addition, made us feel wonderfully at home. Moreover, Gudrun welcomed us with a great selection of foods in the fridge and pantry! -- it held everything we needed to have a nice breakfast after a red-eye flight from Boston. Gudrun and her husband are exemplary hosts -- extremely helpful when needed, warm and easy-going, and at the same time very discreet and unobtrusive. The yard has a trampoline, and there are two adult bikes. In addition, Gudrun managed to arrange a little bike (and a helmet) for our 3.5 years old son! In general, the area of Laugardalur where this house is located seems to be ideal as a base for families with young children: botanic gardens, a little zoo with farm animals and a fantastic playground are just fifteen minutes away by foot; and a top-class open-air swimming pool Laugardalslaug is equally close. We ended up going there four times during one week, it was so pleasant to end the day in a hotpot. Another recommendation is going to cafe Flora inside the nearby botanic gardens -- it is located in a greenhouse with figs, olives and grapes, and serves lovely meals and cakes at a relatively inexpensive price. Getting to the center of Reykjavik is straightforward -- the bus station is by the house; the bus runs every fifteen minutes and takes about ten minutes; one can also walk (it takes around forty minutes), or bike. I strongly recommend this house, especially for families with children -- and I will be hoping to come back one day.
