Stunning location great for groups of friends.

5 of 5
I booked the house for 3 nights with a group of friends to celebrate my 30th Birthday. There was 11 of us in total and it was very comfortable. The house had everything you wanted in it and was in a beautiful location. The local town of Hella had a lovely bakery with delicious bread, sandwiches and treats and a supermarket next to it where you could get everything you needed. The owner of the property was friendly and very easy to communicate with. I would highly recommend the property for groups of friends or families who want a spacious base from which to explore the delights of Southern Iceland. The country itself is very beautiful and i would definitely recommend it for a long weekend trip or even a week or more if you wanted to explore more of the country.

Iceland Adventurers

4 of 5
We stayed at this house and had a wonderful time. Our group also felt we should be forthright so that other renters would benefit from our experiences. For starters, the owner gave us a link for directions, but they omitted which street to turn on. We found the house after driving around, but if we had arrived at night, we would have been out of luck. Here are the directions: From Reykjavik, take Highway 1 to Highway 35. Turn left on Highway 35. Turn left on Highway 36. Turn right on Highway 351 toward Burfell (dirt road) just past Hotel Grimsborgir. From Highway 351, turn right on “Asabraut” (little green sign). The house is up a small hill on the left. The hot tub was a surprise. The cover was ripped and was being held down with rocks, leaving debris and leaves that we had to clean out. We also filled the hot tub ourselves with a hose from the laundry room. It helps to leave the hose in the hot tub with a small trickle of cold water to regulate the heat. Once we figured out the hot tub idiosyncracies, we enjoyed it almost every evening..but sadly never saw any Northern Lights. The washer and dryer is great, if a little hard to understand. Kalt is cold. Stick with that if you're worried about shrinkage. We re-washed all of the towels as they were scratchy from being air-dried. There are two dryers, and the one next to the washer is just fine. We had hoped to use the guest bedroom outside, but this was impossible. There was a double bed (not a queen) and literally no room for even a suitcase on the floor. The bathroom had a swing door and a tiny sink. Do not count on it for sleeping arrangements unless it’s for a teen wanting space, and they would probably love it. The size of the beds is misleading. There are no queen beds, only doubles with two twin-sized duvets. If you want to snuggle, you overlap duvets, which is a challenge. Also, the king bed is two twins with a thin pillow top-like mattress on top. Because there is a small 1-2 inch gap between bed heights, it will feel like the Great Divide at night. Plus...those individual duvets make it hard to cuddle. This review may sound negative, but -- honestly -- we would come back to this house again. The kitchen is stupendous and the house is modern and clean. The bathroom and double shower downstairs are five-star, hands down. The location is also perfect for sightseeing, with many attractions -- Thingvellir, Geysir, Gulfoss, and Kerio -- nearby. Enjoy!

Convenient & Quiet Apartment in Reykjavik

5 of 5
This apartment is a renovated basement unit in a private house in a quiet residential section of northwest Reykjavik. The owners are husband and wife, Pall and Dagrun, two of the nicest people you are likely to meet in Iceland. Pall, who also runs an outdoor guide business, provided welcome recommendations for day-trips into the county and for many of the “must-see” tourist attractions. Dagrun generously offered to wash and dry our laundry at their house, when we found the dryer listed with the apartment had been removed for repairs. They also provided us additional towels to take to the swimming pool, which save us the $5 USD rental fee. Pall and Dagrun both have professional day-jobs and were helpful in describing the business climate in Iceland and some of the cultural norms. The apartment has a well equipped kitchen, with dishwasher, which we used mostly for breakfast, because we were traveling almost every day. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with 2 singles. It seems ideal for a family with 2 kids, but it worked fine for 4 adults who have previously traveled together. Having unlimited hot water in the shower for everyone is a nice Icelandic benefit. The apartment is located a 5- minute walk from a bakery (good for breakfast pastry or sandwiches) and 2 supermarkets; 10-minute walk from the nearest thermally heated swimming pool (Vesturbaejarlaug); and 15-20 minutes to most of the Reykjavik business area. If you plan to rent a car, Pall and Dagrun offer their guests a 5-seat SUV for $99 USD /day (as of May 2014) with a GPS and you can pick the days you want to use it. This is a Great Deal if you comparison shop. This is not an off-road vehicle, but the all-wheel drive is nice in the rain and on gravel roads. If you are planning to drive off-road in a rental vehicle, I recommend you visit the web site http://icelandreview.com and search for “off-road fine” to decide if it’s worth the risk. We would certainly recommend this apartment because of the owners and its location.
