                              Peaceful Retreat

                              5 of 5
We stayed at the Lokilani for 9 nights to celebrate our anniversary and couldn't have found a more perfect place. The cottage itself is absolutely beautiful and very well taken care of. It is evident that much love and thought were invested in creating a place of quiet retreat. Located in the Waimea Valley, you will be nestled into the soft hills with the most amazing views. There are bountiful herbs growing right outside the main entry and Matt will welcome you with kindness and generous offerings from his garden, not to mention eggs from his sweet chickens. You are a very scenic 10 minute drive from some of the most beautiful beaches we encountered on the island, as well as Waimea town, where we found yummy gluten free breakfast bars at the local coffee shop! You will have everything you need provided for you in this home, and Matt was a phone call away whenever we needed anything. We drove all around the island and spent 2 days on the Volcano side, immediately missing the special calm of Waimea. It has certainly become our favorite part of the Big Island and largely because of our experience staying at the Lokilani. Favorite restaurants nearby include the Red Water Cafe, Blue Dragon Musiqarium, and Seafood Bar! Highly recommend the same guidebook listed: "Big Island Revealed" for useful tips. Our favorite activities included visits to the Waipio Valley, numerous beaches recommended in the guidebook (including Punalu'u or Black Sand Beach where sea turtles are frequent, tide pools at Wawaloli Beach, and our favorite swimming beaches minutes from the cottage - Hapuna & Mauna Kea Beach next to each other). Also recommend the dolphin swim & nighttime manta ray snorkel with Coral Reef Adventures - absolutely magical!!

A unique upscale ranch home with vistas, animals , and relaxation

                              5 of 5
Thanks Gini for sharing this peaceful property with us. Living on the west coast we come to Hawaii every year. We have done the whole ocean front luxury resort villa thing many times. And while that is great for most people. I like space, scenery, and relaxing and my wife loves luxury. This place has both in spades. We have stayed in houses near Captain Cook and I have to tell you that this place is more convenient. It may be further distance wise. But there is very light traffic and it takes less time to get the best beaches and the shopping in Kona. Also I like to go up to the observatory at least once a trip. The convenience to that is unsurpassed on the island. But here is a little secret. Looking at the stars from the property at 4,000 ft is every bit as good as from the summit through my 70mm bins and not so cold. It was a real treat to look at the constellations in Puppis which are not visible on the mainland . I love watching the weather and most days the clouds roll up to the level of the Ranch in the afternoon which is no coincidence as this creates the beautiful green belt that is isolated at that altitude. If you do stay here treat yourself to driving a few miles up the saddle road towards the new bypass road if it is cloudy at the house. You will drive up right out of the clouds and see one of the prettiest sunsets you've ever seen with the larger mountains including Maui all above the clouds. We are animal lovers and enjoyed the horses that would come great us in the morning, The turkeys, owls, goats, sheep, donkeys that all enjoy this unique place. The only suggestion I would recommend would be more space heaters as it got rather cold in the great room in the morning and if there were more of us the guest rooms would have gotten cold. That said we were there during a cold and stormy January and perhaps that is not normal. I have really good pictures that I would love to upload if it was an option. The Kohala beaches were roughly 45 minutes away but it is such a pretty drive with light traffic that you hardly notice it. Rob
