Awesome location

4 of 5
Note: this was my first trip to Hawaii. We were 2 families with kids plus one nanny and one in-law (6 adults, 3 kids total). Location: awesome. A house is a couple of steps through the bushes to the beach, and the sea right in front of the house is very calm even on stormish days. A couple of surfing spots are quite close to the house (1 minute drive to Sunset; 4 minute drive to pipeline), but in front of the house it was safe to swim even when Sunset point had big 4m waves. Also, the house is close (2 minute walk) to a nice "cafe" (effectively, food truck with a building; food is good), and is about 5 minute drive from a supermarket. Also, you can enjoy sun setting into the ocean next to the mountains if you walk 100 meters along the beach. The house has a nice patio and a balcony overviewing the ocean -- really enjoyed sitting there. The house is not a top-notch super luxury, but has everything you need to concentrate on sleeping, sunbathing and swimming :) The only problems were the doors: several doors inside the house would require some effort to close, and also several of them did not have locks. We could live with it, but it looks like something which can be easily fixed. Also, at least one bedroom did not have curtains (I felt fine without them, but just FYI). The bottom line: given that this was the cheapest house we could find, I was fully satisfied. Great location, nice views -- totally enjoyed it.

Wonderful property, awesome experience.

5 of 5
I loved staying here, sitting on the deck while watching/listening to the waves crash on the beach never got old day or night. The sunsets are unreal, the stars are bright, and the sunsets are incredible. Some friends and I needed a place to stay on the North Shore to attend a mutual friend's wedding in late October. Our desires were that the place sleep six adults, has direct access to the beach, is reasonably priced, and is relatively close to all amenities. This place fits all of those criteria and is also a great place. The house is up to date with new appliances including a 32" HDTV. There is wifi and it has reliably good speeds, I found that 10-15M down was typical. The kitchen has the usual appliances as well as a blender and a coffee maker. The place was very clean and there were plenty of beach towels. There's a laundry room in case you need to wash any clothes and said beach towels. There's a grocery store five minutes down the road and a gas station less than a block away. Swimming in the ocean in late October isn't recommended in front of the house, though the surf was good given that there was a competition happening 400 yards down the beach. Waimea is 10 minutes away by car and has great swimming. If there's any flaws, they have to do with cooking. The knives were very dull, I couldn't find one that would cut through the skin of a salmon filet, the grill is charcoal which can be difficult to light during the frequently windy conditions, and there was no food storage containers so stock up on glad wrap at the store. The deck, which I could happily spend the rest of my life on, is super slippery when wet so keep some footwear on the back deck (no footwear in the house). I'm now trying to figure out when I can get back to this gem on the North Shore.

Great house for a family reunion

4 of 5
Our family stayed at Tutu's House in September as a mini family reunion. This house worked well for all six of us ranging from 21 months old to 63 years old. It was comfortable, a well stocked kitchen and the best views of the North Shore. The house was clean, had plenty of towels, bedding and family entertainment. The only difficulty we ran into is the trade winds weren't blowing and the temperature was in the 90's. The house isn't air conditioned, so was stiffiling. The manager was called and brought fans over that day, which helped a little bit. It turned out to be an unusually hot week and our family was very uncomfortable in the house. Just be aware when you come to Hawaii during the hot months and are intolerant of all day heat, look for a property that has air conditioning. Also the house sits along the busy 2 lane Kamehameha Highway with traffic going by day and night. Two of the three bedrooms face the highway so sleeping is a challenge. Most of the beachfront houses on the North Shore are situated that way. Being so close to the beach makes up for some inconveniences. All in all a nice property in a nice location.
