OUR 5th STAY AND THE BEST ONE YET!

5 of 5
My wife and I have take an annual vacation on the Big Island the past 7 years. Initially we would split our time between Kona and Hilo in B&B's. In 2010 we discovered this little blue beach/cliff house where the ocean in the front yard goes all the way to Mexico. It has the best of the best for what we seek in a Hawaiian vacation. Quiet, away from the noise and crowds yet accessible to shopping, restaurants, superb snorkeling and the best Sunday market on the Island. Even the white sand beaches on the Kohala coast are only an hour and a half away. The Puna district represents what we consider "old" Hawaii where the spirit and traditional way of life co-exists with all the modern conveniences (near at hand). We vacation to "get away" from it all. No cell phones or internet. I only use my phone to find my wife in WalMart or Costco. The owners are wonderful hosts and the property managers are first rate. Would we come again? We will be booking visit # 6 (as soon as the bills for #5 are paid)! Michael M.

Great spot for the North Shore

5 of 5
This is a great location if you're planning to spend time in the North Shore, you can pretty much walk to Haleiwa if you'd like to check out the stores and restaurants, or just bring some food in and enjoy it on the balcony overlooking the ocean. It's a great spot for snorkeling, I accidentally almost ran into Slowpoke (I call him that), he's the biggest of 2 turtles that was hanging out every day right at the front of the house. The other guy Speedy is a little smaller and is probably Slowpoke's offspring. This is a good spot to go during the windy months, since there's no AC, but when we were there, the breeze would keep the bedroom side cool and the fans were helpful. The bathrooms looked pretty new, the two beach chairs which you can use is perfect for when you just want to hang out by the beach. There's a lot of utensils in the kitchen and the flooring is just right for you to walk on without having to bring in any shoes. The hallways do carry sound, so the neighbors know to try to stick to the quiet time of 10pm to 8am, or something like that. It was a good place to start our trip.

All True!

5 of 5
My husband, 25-yr old daughter and I stayed for 5 days and loved it there. I just re-read the description of the cottage and it is completely accurate. Everything I was going to say is already there. So colorful, comfortable, carefully maintained! Every little detail from the lovely (old?) photos of hula dancers in the bedroom to the interesting turquoise pottery dishes and glassware in the kitchen feels chosen with care. I feared it might be funky and was both relieved and delighted to find it spotless and lovely. As for Waimanalu itself: again, great description: "Old Hawaii". Rural, small and a community of permanent residents -- not just tourists. The beach is your tropical fantasy PLUS really safe and easy. We are water wimps and felt at ease there. We ate well at Sweet Home, Hawaii Time Cafe, Sergs and Keneke's. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on Oahu!
