Peace and Quiet :)

5 of 5
I would highly recommend this rental. We traveled there with our two girls (10 and 15) to visit my husband's father. His dad's place was only 15-20 mins from the house. What a nice, quiet neighborhood! The frogs and such at night weren't overly loud and only occasional road noise or barking dogs. It was a nice, relaxing home after a busy day hiking or snorkeling. All the facilities were clean and comfortable, the laundry was really handy to have - we didn't have to travel home with a ton of dirty clothes - also means we didn't have to pack as much. There were also plenty of extra towels, sunscreen, etc in the closets which was very nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!

Great location to explore Volanoes National Park

5 of 5
Review #10866649 “Great location to explore Volanoes National Park” This is a fantastic cottage to stay near Volcanoes National Park. I stayed a week with my daughter during our end of year holiday break and we had a fantastic time. It is within a few miles of the Park and Volcano Village, so it is easy to explore the park and hike with quick, easy access to great restaurants--Thai, Thai and Kilauea Lodge. Some of the highlights were hiking In the Park and exploring areas on the Chain of Craters drive (especially the petroglyphs hike), seeing the Halema'uma'u crater glow and hearing Pele rumble at night, viewing the spectacular night sky on a clear night from the back deck of the cottage, watching the turtles at Richardson beach tidepools and on the beach at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, seeing the current lava flow from Pu'u' O'o in the helicopter. The only downside was having to drive 30 min in either direction (N/S) to get to a beach, but after seeing Hilo, I would much prefer to stay in Volcano, and it takes a good few days to truly experience all that Volcanoes Park has to offer. We will happily return some day for another visit.

Great deal and great location!

5 of 5
My family and I really enjoyed staying at Dan's place for a week. It was better than any hotel experience and gave us lots of flexibility. The bedroom bed is nice and soft and all linens were in like-new condition. Our kids are teenagers and were able to sleep just fine on the futon. Dan provides sleeping bags or sheets for the futon. The bathroom was very nice. The color-changing lights were fun, too. The Big Island guidebook that Dan provided was better than anything we found and really helped us with what to do and see on the island. It proved very helpful in finding waterfalls and knowing where to go. The kitchen was very well-stocked. We cooked using the stove and the toaster oven. We bought groceries at the Keaau Foodland, just a 10-minute drive away. You can also shop at Target or Wal-Mart in Hilo, about 20 minutes away.  Having the use of a washer and dryer really helped us out and was a major selling point for us. We had multiple flight connections to make and so packed everything we needed into carry-ons and did laundry a few times. Dan went above the call of duty here in supplying laundry detergent. Note that there is no AC or heat, but you really don't need those. We kept the windows open in the day and used the ceiling fan for circulation, then closed the windows at night. It gets down into the 60's at night in the winter. We wanted to stay on the Hilo side of the island because it is less "touristy" and more rural. Also, it is close to the volcanoes and active lava flow. My son and I went running in the neighborhood a couple times. Many of the roads beyond Dan's place (farther away from 130) are dirt/gravel roads, so I would advise against driving on them unless you rent a higher clearance vehicle. It really is a big island so you can end up driving a bit to see the various sights, but Dan's location is great (<40 min to HVNP, 20 min to Hilo, <30 min to Kapoho tide pools, about an hour to Mauna Kea, about 1.5 hrs to Waipio, 2 hrs to Kailua-Kona). Dan was a gracious host and very responsive to my multiple texts. He enjoys sharing his place with others and would like to continue to improve it even further. Dan enjoys making electronic music and showed us some of what he's working on. Overall, highly recommend it. We look forward to visiting again!
