As close to a house boat as dry land can be!

5 of 5
Whether it's sitting on the deck watching the sun rise over the ocean, or exploring the tide pools directly below you at high or low tide, there can't be a better place to stay. The owners have done a good job repairing the house from hurricane damage, which you can see all around you, and we expect it will simply improve with time. Pahoa Town is about twenty minutes away, and there are good restaurants (try Kaleo's). Shopping in Pahoa is limited, in part because the recent volcanic activity has closed a couple of key stores, but there is plenty of shopping up the road towards Hilo. Don't miss the Maku'u farmers' market on Sunday! Susanna was great to work with. We definitely will recommend this property to friends.

A Hidden Gem on the East Side

5 of 5
Staying at Walea Hale really made our vacation and was a place we will never forget. The guide books do not do justice to how beautiful the area is and what a great spot for snorkeling the Wai 'Opae Tide Pools are. The tide pools are protected from waves yet very deep in some places, making it a great spot for the less experienced snorkelers and children to explore and see a lot of marine life. The home, just a few blocks from the tide pools, was beautiful, clean and spacious and had all the amenities one could wish for. The owner was very friendly and helpful, providing numerous recommendations for restaurants and attractions to see nearby. We were able to visit several of places on the list during our (too) short stay there and found everything recommended to be worthwhile. The reservation and check-in process was organized and very easy. We cannot wait to go back and spend more time at this lovely property and highly recommend it!

exactly as advertised in photos, but better

No need to leave this rental except for food runs. The warm (even all winter) ocean inlets right out the door, full of schools of coloured fishes, and angels, needles, eels, puffers, mullets - lots to watch without even needing a snorkel! Every afternoon the turtles came to sleep in the next door lagoon and you could watch them from above thru the crystal clear waters. Grass to play on, water toys available, warm private lagoon (with its own fish life) small BBQ pavilion on the lower level. Great The lanai overlooks the yard, so you can have a drink while the sun goes down & watch the kids swim or play. Outdoor sand shower (not very sandy here tho) Nice supply of towels, including ones to use at the beach. Very clean! & maintained well. Spacious inside with 2 full suites for bathroom privacy, good showers. There are up to date electronics, as well as a well supplied kitchen. Cook while visiting with friends/family in the open plan great room. Beautiful views from every window!! Every one! Parking is easy for 2 cars on the property, and the grounds are immaculate all the time. Great sunrises, great sunsets, pretty green & blue geckos keep the decks bug free. I will & already have given this listing to friends & family. We loved an ocean you could swim in in december, the lava tour at the transfer station in Pahoa, and Pahoa, of course. We enjoyed the green heavenly drive to Kalapana & the Alahanui warm ponds on the way. We loved the rainy drive to Waimea's tasty brew pub for lunch & the Waipio valley overlook, the waterfalls along the way. In the jungle, wild orchids bloom & philodendrons worthy of a tarzan swing drape across the limbs of huge trees, giant wild avocados fall thru the forest into hapu fern clumps bigger than your car. Take the old highway as much as you can, the goodies are often hidden. Take your time. Magic needs a moment…. Lunch in Volcano National park at the overlook, with the caldera spewing smoke just outside the window while you dine on wonderful local sourced foods, and more tasty locally brewed drinks. Walk the gorgeous parks & waterways of old Hilo town, so beautifully human in scale, its a terrific ocean front haven. We had our best meals @ Clearpond Paradise, making them out of Big Island foods & fishes - plan to visit the farmers markets & buy local. Everything you need to make it yummy is there.
