Private cottage off grid

5 of 5
We stayed for three night at Mary's Garden cottage and enjoyed living "Off Grid". I had always thought we were fairly mindful in our lifestyle but it really comes home when you depend on the weather to charge the batteries and provide your water. Mary has back up when Mother Earth doesn't provide what is needed so no fear of running out of water or electricity. The cottage is very private, quiet and clean. Mary provided us with nice treats of papaya and coffee from her trees and eggs from her chickens. There were many staples in the cupboards as well which sure helps when you are travelling and yet want to cook your own meals. The cottage is very convenient to explore Waipo Valley, Akaka Falls, Tropical Botanical Gardens, Mauna Kea and Hilo. Thanks Mary for all your hospitality.

Very relaxing and comfortable place

5 of 5
We had a very pleasant time at this house overlooking the Laupahoehoe Point. Everything about the place was ideal... location was great (far enough from Hilo, but close enough), views and weather were perfect, has a complete kitchen, wireless internet (that was a pleasant surprise), cable TV, comfortable bedrooms, a really sweet lanai overlooking the ocean. The little park down at the point has an interesting history and a dynamic relationship with the ocean. We made day-trips to the volcano, to the numerous waterfalls nearby, and to several beaches and local parks. We made dinner each night in the kitchen, and we felt right at home. I would highly recommend this place to families who are looking to avoid the expense and general hassle of hotel-living.
