A Great Family Getaway

5 of 5
We chose this home for an extended family vacation on the Big Island after our first choice closer to Kona fell through; turns out to have been for the best as this home was fantastic and provided an excellent base for touring the island and was a peaceful, gorgeous location for just relaxing and enjoying the sunsets and amenities of the home. Our stay was not without some challenges, the first involved an invasion of mice owing to unusual amounts of rain for the time of year; being intended for open-air living (i.e. doors and windows always open, no A/C), it was tough to keep the little friends out of the house entirely, but kudos to the manager and staff for doing their best to address the situation. The second challenge was a main drain clog that led to backed up toilets in two bathrooms; quite unpleasant but the manager worked the phones until a plumber could come out to rectify. They did an excellent and unobtrusive job of cleaning the bathrooms and restoring the systems, so what could have been a disaster ended up being a minor nuisance. Now for the many positives: the pool was terrific and used extensively by the whole family; the rooms were huge, comfortable and very tastefully decorated; the kitchen was well-stocked and allowed us to easily prepare many meals for our large group; and the volcano, ocean and sunset views were simply amazing, we spent many if not most of our hours at the house outside on the multiple patios enjoying the incredible scenery. The nearly 2,000 foot elevation of the home not only made for cooler conditions but a stunning perch for viewing a large chunk of the island. While Kohala is pretty remote (don't forget anything at the grocery store!), we quickly adjusted to slightly longer commutes to the island sites and appreciated the privacy and peacefulness of the location. Rea is a great owner and Audrey was a very helpful on-site manager, we would be very happy to stay in this lovely home again someday.

Fabulous place to stay

5 of 5
Thank you Bruce for letting me stay in your beautiful home. This home is wonderfully situated from the scenery to the location. The home has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would possibly need for cooking. If you are not in the mood for cooking there are great restaurants nearby. Try to catch the Huli chicken man. The chicken he cooks is mouth watering. The store in Waimea is only a few miles away. You will be able to pick up everything you need there or you can stop at the store in Kona before you head to the house. I loved the décor of the house. It is very comfortable and peaceful. I spent a lot of time admiring the art in the house. My favorite feature was the shower in the master bath. Wow! Would have been great to share that with someone, lol. There are grounds on the property are wonderful. I spent a lot of time in the pool. It is fabulous at night will all the stars overhead. Watching all the birds and geckos is very entertaining. The wild turkeys come to the pool every afternoon to get a drink. Spent a lot of time driving around admiring the scenery. I was able to drive to the Waipio Valley lookout. This is a must see. I tried to drive north to see the Pololu valley but got lost somewhere along the way. Even that was fun. Seeing the natural beauty of Hawaii is very good for the soul. If you stop by the guard house at the gate, they are very helpful with directions and places to go. I obviously didn't ask for their help in getting to the Pololu valley or where to find a sandy beach. I will next time. I will definitely be back next year.

Great Location, Stunning Property, minor drawbacks

4 of 5
When we booked this home, all of the reviews were 5 star, but as our vacation drew closer, several 1 star reviews popped up, so we were a bit nervous. I'm not sure what happened with those other stays (as the owner mentioned, the dishwasher was replaced and the cleaning service changed), but we didn't find many faults with this home. Towels were provided as were a few pool floats and boogie boards. The view is absolutely top-notch. The few houses you can see from the lanai and pool don't detract from your views. Also, the current construction near the home inside the ranch appears that it will not effect the view. As for the home itself, it is very comfortable and bright. There are a few small things that are problematic, though. 1) The cleaning crew is still leaving spider webs (not cobwebs, but webs with spiders) in the corners 2) I think a bit more pest control would be helpful in keeping the tiny sugar ants we found a few times at bay, especially in the kitchen 3) Many windows don't seal when closed, so winds tend to make them whistle 4) Most bathrooms don't have a ventilation fan (though, oddly, the laundry room does) 5) The living room sofas are a bit worn out and could stand to be replaced Those small faults do not do much to detract from the overall enjoyment of house and the fantastic location. We would definitely recommend this home to anyone looking to stay in the Kohala Ranch area. The approximate elevation of 500ft does seem to be in the "perfect" range of warmth and sun while maintaining the breezes. Note that the home has no air conditioning and only open windows and doors and ceiling fans will provide ventilation. Most times, this isn't an issue, but if you like to sleep with everything closed, it can be a bit warm until about 10pm in the bedrooms. In summary, this is a very luxurious home and with a bit of a push, should be one of the best homes available in Kohala Ranch and on the entire island. By the way, during your stay in the home or in Kohala Ranch, be sure to make frequent trips to Anuenue Shave Ice and Kohala Burger and Taco, which are both about 5 minutes down the road.
