Great deal and great location!

My family and I really enjoyed staying at Dan's place for a week. It was better than any hotel experience and gave us lots of flexibility. The bedroom bed is nice and soft and all linens were in like-new condition. Our kids are teenagers and were able to sleep just fine on the futon. Dan provides sleeping bags or sheets for the futon. The bathroom was very nice. The color-changing lights were fun, too. The Big Island guidebook that Dan provided was better than anything we found and really helped us with what to do and see on the island. It proved very helpful in finding waterfalls and knowing where to go. The kitchen was very well-stocked. We cooked using the stove and the toaster oven. We bought groceries at the Keaau Foodland, just a 10-minute drive away. You can also shop at Target or Wal-Mart in Hilo, about 20 minutes away.  Having the use of a washer and dryer really helped us out and was a major selling point for us. We had multiple flight connections to make and so packed everything we needed into carry-ons and did laundry a few times. Dan went above the call of duty here in supplying laundry detergent. Note that there is no AC or heat, but you really don't need those. We kept the windows open in the day and used the ceiling fan for circulation, then closed the windows at night. It gets down into the 60's at night in the winter. We wanted to stay on the Hilo side of the island because it is less "touristy" and more rural. Also, it is close to the volcanoes and active lava flow. My son and I went running in the neighborhood a couple times. Many of the roads beyond Dan's place (farther away from 130) are dirt/gravel roads, so I would advise against driving on them unless you rent a higher clearance vehicle. It really is a big island so you can end up driving a bit to see the various sights, but Dan's location is great (<40 min to HVNP, 20 min to Hilo, <30 min to Kapoho tide pools, about an hour to Mauna Kea, about 1.5 hrs to Waipio, 2 hrs to Kailua-Kona). Dan was a gracious host and very responsive to my multiple texts. He enjoys sharing his place with others and would like to continue to improve it even further. Dan enjoys making electronic music and showed us some of what he's working on. Overall, highly recommend it. We look forward to visiting again!
