Just as advertised

5 of 5
We are in the 6th day of our week-long stay at Makana Akua and it is exactly like the advertisement: Nice house, nice furnishings, nice kitchen, nice backyard, beautiful views from the back porch and a spectacular location on the beach. The only downside is the ocean is quite treacherous here. I tried to go boogie boarding here today and a neighbor stopped me. He said he had been living here for 38 years, that he used to be a lifeguard, that he has had to pull three people out of the ocean here and one of them drowned. With that as a warning, I played in the shore break, but even that was pretty strong. Of course, this is winter surf, so maybe the summer surf is more benign. In any case, Hanalei Bay is just 15 minutes away and it has safe surf. Hanalei Bay, by the way, is a very nice Old Hawaiian town full of good places to eat and drink and the friendliest people I've met in a long while. Postcards and Baracuda topped our list of favorites, but don't forget to catch the sunset and a drink from the porch at the St. Regis in Princeville. And Limahuli Gardens, just 3 minutes up the road is worth an hour's walk. This is Mellow Country, so if you come here, get ready to chill. If you can't chill, stay in Poipu. We'll be back.

Hawaiian Paradise

5 of 5
The Bamboo Hideaway is an amazing house with an abundance of aloha. Everything you want in a vacation rental and more. It’s artistic, roomy, comfortable, private, and has a huge lanai. Cooking was easy in the well-equipped modern kitchen and outdoor gas BBQ. For dinner we’d either pick up fish to grill at the Hanalei Dolphin Fish Market (along with a few of their impossible to resist fresh sushi rolls) or eat at one of the many Hanalei restaurants. There is also a great Mediterranean restaurant just across the street from the house that we frequented during our stay. For us the location was perfect. It’s only a 2-minute walk to some of the best espresso drinks on the island and in a few more steps you are on a vast beach that is never crowded. Most mornings as we walked along the ocean on our way to Tunnels Beach we were met by a pack of giant sea turtles swimming just a few feet from the shore. You could almost touch them. Hanalei is just a short drive away with lots of interesting shops, grocery stores and a local farmers market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. We never felt the need to leave the North Shore during our stay. We will definitely be back.

All ya need, plus sand and sea! (and chickens)

5 of 5
Perfect place, more than adequate. On the sea shore in the sun, or shade as you wish and only a two minute walk. (maybe 100 yds?). We enjoyed it so very much. All essentials are there for use, and we were quite comfortable. I sure do hope we can make it happen to visit again. Also - enjoyed the squadron of chickens who came to visit. Melodic (sort of) and vibrantly colorful. The birds seemed to like us too.
