                                  PERFECT LOW KEY VACATION

                                  5 of 5
It's not often that a vacation rental is better than advertised, but this one truly is. We were looking for a low-key holiday in a beautiful setting where we'd have quiet, comfort and privacy and we found it at Hana Oceanfront Cottages. The two hour drive along the Hana Highway was worth every twisty mile. We arrived in darkness at about 7:15pm, to a cozily lighted cottage with wonderfully welcoming Hawaiian music playing through the TV inside. The ceiling fans and screened windows provide nice air flow for sleeping and the bed is very comfortable. We awoke the next day to an amazing pink sky and the panorama of Hamoa Beach at sunrise. We kept saying to each other the entire week we were there, "Next time, 2 weeks!" ....as we sat on the front porch, (Lanai), watching whales breach out in the bay in the late afternoon. Sandi and Dan are lovely hosts, and very knowledgeable about the area. Sandi has prepared a binder with lots of suggestions on things to see and do. The (easy) concrete steps down to Hamoa Beach are just a few dozen yards down and across the road from the cottage....a nice stroll with your coffee on an early morning to watch a local surfer or two looking to catch a couple of good waves before going off to work. Later on a few tourists arrive, but there's not a lot of parking, so not many. :) There's one Hotel in Hana that shuttles beach goers to Hamoa, but again, it was never very busy and we were there during Spring Break. While much of the Hana Hwy sees rain off and on, especially in the Winter and Spring, once you reach Hamoa Bay you'll find that it tends to have its own micro-climate of sunshine. Pick up groceries at the Costco, Walmart or Safeway in Kahului. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the local farm stands along the Hana Hwy. If you need something there are two grocery stores in the town of Hana. We met the couple staying in the main house suite...they'd been coming back every year for 13 years. We'll be back!

TRULY THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TIME IN MAUI

                                  5 of 5
My wife and I stayed for two nights as part of a week long trip to Maui. The pictures we viewed online looked great but given the price we were skeptical how nice the house could actually be (costs a fraction of one room Wailea resort). When we arrived at the house on the evening of Jan. 3rd we were completely blown away by the quality of the materials used in the house, everything was top notch. If the house itself wasn't enough we found a basket of fresh fruit from the property awaiting our arrival. As we explored the house we were happy to find that everything we could possibly need was already stocked in the house (i.e. laundry soap, dishwasher soap, trash bags, even a huge spice cabinet full or seasonings). Needless to say, when we woke up the next day and walked around the property we were again surprised by how beautiful the grounds were. In addition to the countless bowling ball size avocados and other various fruits and veggies, there were a large variety of different plants and flowers. it was absolutely beautiful. A few additional notes to end on... If you plan to stay at this house make sure to find Thai by Pranee (in Hana) and the clay oven pizza stand, both were very good. Other than that I would recommend stopping at Mana Foods in Paia before you drive out, there are very few grocery options when you arrive. Also, make sure that you visit the Seven Sacred Pools, it is the last stop on the road to Hana and is one of the most amazing things we've every seen. Lastly, I do have one small word of caution... if you are bothered by spiders or small lizards be prepared. There were quite a few spiders around the property and the lanai as well as a very small gecko in the kitchen. This is the price you pay for having true peace and quite out in Hana but it is very much worth it. Thank you to Helene for all your hospitality and providing such a great alternative to the over crowded beaches of Wailea.
