Seventh trip to Hawaii but our first trip to Oahu and we knew we didn’t want to be too close to Honolulu so I looked for a condo on the North Shore. It’s hard for me to rate this condo because other than the stellar beaches of the North Shore, I much prefer the other islands. However, if you are looking for a condo near the North Shore surf action, this one is very well located and within walking distance of town that has a few restaurants and food trucks.
What I really liked about this unit was that it was directly beach front. We made use several times of the beach—walking it or just hanging out and it was nice to have it right in front of our condo.
On the negative, the bedroom is in the front of the unit where the walkway and (more annoyingly) the lights are. This unit does not have air conditioning so the windows need to stay open but the light from the outside made it difficult to sleep on the queen size bed. To her credit, when I mentioned this to the owner, she came out twice—once to remove the bulb by the window and the next time to put in some room darkening curtains. By this time, we had decided just to sleep on the futon in the living room as it was cooler, darker and we could listen to the waves. However, at times I was struck by the fact that I was paying $200/night to make up and sleep on a futon each night. A few other things were frustrating—no dishwasher, no icemaker, no oven and a few lamps that had electrical shorts.
In the end, I was less than thrilled but yes, I would stay there again thanks to the quick response of the owner. I’m not sure how this fairs with other units in the area for a similar price point. I guess I just expected more.
