Blown away... would live happily ever after here.

5 of 5
My entire group of five agreed that we would happily live in this house for the rest of our lives. It was definitely more luxury living than we expected. The view was *incredible*, the house was equipped with everything we need, and the kitchen was great for making dinners and breakfasts together as a group. It had the basics for cooking supplies, like cooking oils, pans, cutting boards, silverware, etc. We also loved that the house came with boogie boards, floaty noodles, and snorkling gear. We had a jaw dropping snorkling experience, and we couldn't believe that it was free since we got to use the gear from the house. Tina had very fast responses throughout the process and was great to deal with. I am so happy we picked this house... I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in it.

Edible paradise, exceptional snorkeling, incredible views, ideal location!

5 of 5
Our family had an incredible time spending our two week Christmas holiday in this lovely home! This house is even better than the pictures! And, the yard is like an edible paradise - we picked a tree ripen papaya, fresh coconuts, citrus, and there were even bananas ripening on the tree! What we liked most was the feeling of being away from the touristy area, but also close enough to drive there each day, if we wanted to. Plus the Islands best snorkeling is available just up the road (Two Step Beach)! From this location we could drive to Hilo, or go up past the airport to other beaches. The local farmers market was a nice way to pick up hand crafts and delicious treats too. Speaking of beaches -the house includes beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, bamboo mats, boogie boards, snorkel gear, ice chests and more! Did you know that in addition to Kona coffee, there is locally grown cocoa? At one coffee place just up the road (green building, near post office at the turn for Two Step) they sell chocolate bars made from the cocoa beans grown on a tree just up the street! For part of our 2 week visit our grandmother stayed with us. We were concerned about the steps, but they were no problem. Plus we all had enough space so we didn't feel cramped. She had The Best time!!! Making family memories was the best gift we could give each other.... After flying into Kona airport (which is so small and old fashioned looking that even our teen boys started humming the Hawaii 5-0 song!) we stopped at Costco. This was perfect -then when we got to the house we used the gas grill to cook salmon, chicken etc - all while enjoying incredible sunsets and being entertained by the sweet geckos! The kitchen has everything you might need - we even used the crock pot one day, baked brownies, and put the rice cooker to work. But the best appliances were the washer and dryer! We packed fewer clothes, and could get everything washed before we headed back home. Marc & Rhona made the whole rental process smooth and easy, plus they returned our full deposit within days - even though we had to ask them to mail our son's laptop charger back to us!!! And we still got our deposit back - in full! With this house, pack lightly, and plan to have a wonderfully relaxing holiday! Wish we were going back already! Aloha & Mahalo

A very Mele Kalikimaka at Mala a Kai!

5 of 5
This is the first VRBO home I have ever rented, and I was so pleased with all the wonderful amenities! I booked this for a family Christmas vacation, with myself, my husband, our three children, (age 17, 17, 10) and my parents. My parents enjoyed their own suite with private bathroom, and stunning views. I packed the kids' stockings, hoping to make Hawaii feel like our Alaska Christmas', and arrived at Mala a Kai to find the owners had lovingly decorated the entire house with wreaths, a Christmas tree, dishes and linens just for us! We had a wonderful Christmas, and my daughter slept under the tree the entire stay. The location is peaceful, with no neighbors able to see in your home. The view from the lanai was relaxing. We saw wild goats, birds, and geckos. We saved money not eating out, and cooked on the BBQ almost nightly. Our kids loved how close Pebble Beach was, and I loved relaxing. The snorkeling was wonderful, and we appreciated using the owners beach equipment! Troy and Mary have truly thought of everything! We appreciated the book of recommended sites/vendors to use, and the list of open air markets. I recommend this location because it is close to Kona to access shopping, the harbor, and other excursions. If you must have the nightlife, and be free of driving...stay in Kona. If you are looking for a relaxing, "people-free" environment without ambient noise, stay at Mala a Kai! We loved it and plan on coming back someday! For first time VRBO users, make sure you disclose the number of people who intend to stay at the unit with you. I didn't know that the price is set by how many occupants plan to stay, and that makes sense considering water has to be delivered to this area and utilities increase with the # of people using. This may seem like common sense, unless you're like me, who is used to a private well and unlimited water.
