Gorgeous! - ideal location, great value

5 of 5
We are now totally sold on vacation rental homes, we will forever avoid hotels and resorts. (We visited Big Island a few years ago and had a nice trip, except that we spent too much $$ on a mere room in a basic beach-side inn.) Now we know we can have a far better vacation for less money in a vacation rental. And Kapehu Retreat House is way beyond your usual vac rental - so classy & elegant & tasteful & gracious & comfy & homey. There were 6 of us: my husband, myself, my parents, and our 2 teenage sons. We could really spread out in the spacious home and each of the boys had his own room. We let my parents have the master suite, which has no blinds, because they don’t mind waking with the sun. Mom said she felt pampered, “cradled” by the pillow-top king mattress. My husband and I took the wailele bedroom above the stream, and loved listening to the rainforest sounds at night - gurgling water, crickets, coqui frogs. I slept so well. The wailele room’s mattress is not pillow-top but firm support which I need for my back, yet with a cushy layer of memory foam on top, one of the best beds I ever slept on. The extraordinarily beautiful home surrounded by huge sweeping views made us feel like lords of a royal manor. The location is great: everything we wanted to do was nearby. Of course the boys had to go to BOTH of the nearby zip line tours. We joined them for the one that zips across 400-ft Akaka Falls: thrilling, gorgeous, terrifying, wonderful. We swam at a black sand beach with giant turtles. Snorkeled at Kapoho Tide Pools among spectacular reef fishes. Hired a bird guide to show us incredible native birds in the nearby Hakalau Forest Reserve. Rode horseback through Waipio Canyon beside twin 1,000-ft waterfalls. Spent a couple of days (not enough) exploring Volcanoes National Park and its hiking trails, craters, steaming vents, lava tubes, etc. Most evenings we got “home” early enough to cook dinner in the beautiful well-outfitted kitchen & ate our meals on the lanai overlooking expanses of green valley and sparkling ocean. Talk about paradise! You'll adore the caretaker Kealani, a “kanaka maoli” (real Hawaiian native) - we sure enjoyed “talking story” with her. And before your trip, look at the list of sights to see on the Kapehu website.

Joy abounds from this amazing venue, great staff!

5 of 5
We could not have imagined a more beautiful place to gather to celebrate life, family, friendship and the marriage of our daughter. Joy and peace seem to emanate from the magnificent wood that speaks from the spirit of old Hawaii mixed with a Balinese feel. We used all of the amenities: pool, sauna, spa, snorkel and paddle-board and saw mantas and whales around the bay. Beautifully stocked kitchen with walk-in fridge was a dream for us to cook and serve our 50 guests. The first-aid drawer for pets as well as their care-givers is just a glimpse of the extraordinary care given to details. The maintenance and care provided by Cookie and Rosie was superb and they worked overtime to clean up after the storm for us. Easy overflow parking is available at the Sheraton across the street. The property has a fascinating history, with interesting furnishings. This is a highly recommended, very special experience. Photos simply cannot due justice to his magnificent venue which exceeded all of our expectations in every way. Lifetime memories were made and we already yearn to return. Thank you.

Wonderful vacation in Turtle house

5 of 5
We have spent three weeks in summer of 2014 in the Karen’s and Tim’s Turtle guest house in Kona, Hawaii. What a wonderful vacation we have had there! The great experience started long before our arrival – Karen was incredibly helpful with all kind of practical information and inspiration, writing us long mails for about half a year before our arrival. We felt as we knew her very well when we came! She and Tim have also made us feel very welcome by buying some food for us for the first night and waiting for our late arrival nearly at midnight. During our stay, we were always welcome to ask any questions, to get any advice, to use all the facilities, and our three teenage kids truly enjoyed the swimming pool and the jacuzzi. In general, expect for the location close to a traffic road, this comfortable house is perfectly situated high above the sea providing enjoyable air temperature and breeze all day long, with a very nice lanai facing the ocean with beautiful palm trees in the garden. We spent a lot of time there relaxing, playing games (given to us by our hosts) with kids, and appreciating our summer vacation. We covered about 1700 miles in 3 weeks visiting all parts of the Big Island and enjoying the contrasts between beaches and mountains, rain and sun, desert and forest. Our departure from the island was delayed by the flight cancellation, and our hosts were very kind and flexible, allowing us to spend an additional night even though next guests were arriving very soon. All in all, it was one of the best vacations we had, a big part of our delightful experience we owed to our host couple. Thank you, Karen and Tim. Best regards Anastassia, Jesper and kids Denmark August 2014
