This is a great location for a relaxing holiday. The villa has a lovely, quiet location above the town of Thira, with views down to it and over the caldera.
The villa has a nice bathroom, 2 bedrooms & kitchen. The spacious lounge is in 2 sections, with a dining table. One thing I liked is that there is lots of light on 1st floor. Our only small criticism is that there isn’t a microwave, but we managed fine without.
The balcony runs along the whole of the front of the villa and down one side. You can find sun or shade, depending on how warm it is. There are always beautiful views, whatever the time of day – the lights of Thira were beautiful at night.
The owners and their property manager were helpful and thoughtful and did everything they could to try to ensure that we enjoyed our holiday. The family obviously love their holiday home.
For evening meals, we walked for a few minutes to the tavernas and restaurants in Thira or to Firosteffani, or we ate in, whilst looking at the magnificent view.
Thira has a network of narrow walkways without traffic. There are lots of touristy shops, but also local shops for provisions & 2 nice bakeries. There are 2 interesting museums to visit with archaeological objects from Akrotiri and Ancient Thira.
The archaeological excavations at Akrotiri are fascinating. It is amazing how developed the Minoan civilization was in 1700BC. There was a fresh water supply, a sewage system and the buildings were up to 5 storeys high. The area which has been excavated is covered by a roof, which would moderate the temperature in summer.
We really enjoyed the walk to Oia with beautiful views over the caldera. It is about 7 miles, 11Km, and can be done in a good pair of trainers. Oia itself is very picturesque, with marble pavements, white buildings and blue roofs.
Pyrgos, an old hilltop village, is nearby and is worthy of a visit. It is unspoilt and atmospheric and it too has many narrow pathways.
We had a fantastic holiday here!
