Everything all the other reviews say about Griffin House and Aris are true. We were picked up at the airport by Spiros, arranged by Aris, which was a terrific start. Then, being met at the house by Aris and shown every detail of the house and the neighborhood made us immediately feel at home. Within a few steps in various directions are a bakery, a fruit market, a small variety market (local meats, cheeses, yogurt, milk, etc.), ATMs, and an "Anytime" market that has pretty much everything you could need and is open (as the name suggests) 24 hours. And, the kitchen was thoughtfully stocked with beer, wine, fresh fruit, coffee and a few other items.
The location within Athens couldn't be any better. It is literally steps to the Acropolis Museum and easy walking distance to everywhere you would want to go. We never used a taxi or public transportation. We rented a car as we were leaving Athens, and the rental companies are all within a 5 minute walk of the house.
The house itself is fantastic, decorated beautifully and supplied with everything you can think of. We took advantage of the washing machine, and the "dryer" (drying racks), which of course brought on a torrential downpour! But the clothes actually didn't get wetter from the rain, thanks to the huge table umbrella on the rooftop garden. The rooftop garden is a fantastic place to hang out!
Access to the upstairs bedroom and the rooftop garden is either by very steep metal stairs outside or a very tight spiral staircase inside. It was fine for us, but I could imagine that it would be difficult for some to manage either of these. Our duffel bags have backpack straps, so we were able to put them on our backs and get them upstairs. Very large bags would be difficult but easily worked around by bringing the contents upstairs in smaller batches.
The only thing that would have improved the stay for our family of 5 (including 3 young adult "kids") would be if one of the rooms had 2 small beds (or a large bed that could be split into 2 or bunked) instead of 1 large bed, but we made do by having one of our kids sleep on the sofa in the living room, which is not a sleeper. It would actually be great if one of the sofas were a futon.
Stay here! You won't regret it! The stay was absolutely amazing, and if we return to Athens, we will definitely return to Griffin House and Aris' hospitality!
