Tastefully decorated apt in the heart of Quillan

5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at Celine and David's place. The apartment was very clean, well renovated and tastefully decorated. We found it spacious for a family of 4. The location is fantastic, quiet and close to the river, yet 1-2 blocks away from all amenities: farmer's market, restaurants, bars, etc. We were luckily to have arrived in the week of the Fest de Quillan and on the night of our arrival, saw an incredible hour long fireworks display right in front of our bedroom window - kids were thrilled! We also took the opportunity to explore the beautiful surrounding area with its vineyards and quaint villages: Esperanza, with a fantastic day market, Limoux and Rennes-les-bains. Carcassonne was a 40 min drive away (or take the 1 EUR bus from Quillan). Collioure on the Mediterranean was a 1 1/2 drive away but well worth a visit: wonderful waterfront cafes and restaurants, clean sandy beach with crystal clear water and very safe for young kids. We would love to come back!

charming, artistic abode in medieval village

5 of 5
If you want to feel like you are living in a storybook set back in time, this sweet, charming spot will do it! Alison's Swallow's Nest is tucked into the stone village cliff with a view of the river. The apartment is filled with lovely touches -- vintage and modern furniture, arched ceilings, a well-stocked kitchen, quality bedding and original art. Much care has gone into making this storybook spot a sweet "nest" to land while in the area! Sauve is an historic medieval village that is in the middle of a two year facelift. There are over twenty different nationalities living in town (although many folks are only in town part of the year.) The view you see as you cross one of the two ancient bridges to the stairs up to the village doesn't do this very welcoming, magical place, justice. Definitely stroll the tiny meandering cobblestone streets -- you will find treasures! PS The restaurant Mole is fabulous.

Away From It All

4 of 5
This is a charming, cozy, well-appointed home in a tiny, tiny village. I visited in the early spring, when the weather was unpredictable and the village was nearly deserted. Guests should know that the only commercial establishments in Aigne are a gourmet restaurant (excellent), two art galleries (closed when I was there) and two wineries (closed for tasting during my visit). So Olonzac, 8 km. down the road, will be one's source for everything from a croissant to a gas tank fill-up. But Aigne is well-located for exploring this lovely region of France. The kitchen is well-equipped, beds comfortable with high-end linens, and there's ample artificial light -- necessary because the house is tucked between two others at the end of a short alley, so natural light is limited, and there is no real view. The only space for tucking away clothing consists of a mezzanine level accessible by what I would characterize as a ladder, rather than a stair. The washer and dryer work well, and hot water is immediate and plentiful. The owner has provided a wealth of informational brochures about things to do in the region, restaurant recommendations, etc., and she kept in close touch with me before and during my visit. I enjoyed my stay, and plan to return later in the season to explore more of the Cathar castles and wineries in the area and feel more of the energy I'm sure develops as the weather improves. The property manager is extremely gracious and helpful. I so wanted to give it five stars. However, I was seeking a place for a stay of a month or longer later in the year, and I knew it wouldn't work for that. So the four star rating reflects my very personal assessment based on my specific need.
