Puts the "House" in "Houseboat".

5 of 5
From the moment we opened the door we were all wowed with this big, beautiful boat. We've stayed on boats before and everything was sort of "miniature". Small, cramped bathroom, tiny kitchen, tight dining space. Not here! It feels very much like a regular house. We were two couples so we had tons of room. My husband and I got to stay in the master bedroom. It has an attached bath that is spacious and has a large bath/shower. We also loved the deck outside our sliding glass doors. The other couple used the middle bedroom and the hall bath. That bath has a door from the middle bedroom and also from the hall, so by closing the one in the hall they had their own "en suite". We didn't use the lower bedroom. The jacuzzi got a lot of use and it was great sitting up there on the top deck. When you looked over the side of the boat it was like looking into an aquarium. Thousands of little fish swimming in big swirls and then parting when a tarpon or other big fish cruised through. One morning we had a manatee visit and that was very exciting. It was nice to find salt, pepper, oil, sugar, coffee creamer, coffee filters, and miscellaneous herbs, spices and condiments in the cupboards. Some rentals clear everything out after every guest. Likewise, the bathrooms had shampoo, conditioner, and liquid hand soap. There was also a small hair dryer. We did bring bar soap for the showers. The marina is really nice and the restaurant serves great food. When we first went in we were afraid that it was only for yacht club members, but they welcomed us without asking any questions. It took a long time to get our main courses which was okay because we were sitting outside enjoying the view. There's also a small store where you can get ice, beer, boating supplies, etc. We didn't want to risk DUI tickets so we always used taxis when we went down to Key West. It was $6.50 per person plus tip for the 4 of us. There are a few restaurants very close to the boat. The only one we tried was the Hog Fish and we really like the feel of the place and the food was good. All of my correspondence for the boat were with a nice man named Lee. He is very easy to work with and is lightening-fast at getting the deposit back to you after you depart. We've rented VRBOs all over the place and never had a deposit returned so quickly. My husband and our friends told me several times that I had done a great job finding this boat for us to stay on. It was awesome!

Enjoying the Keys

5 of 5
We have been using VRBO to travel in Europe, USA and Canada for several years and have never once had a bad experience. Although this was an unusual experience for us and it did not disappoint. We are not sailors and have only once stayed on a much larger sailboat, and approached this with a mix of excitement and intrepidation. While wearing high heals along the dock to get onto the boat was likely not the wisest choice, I did not fall in, and that was a good thing. We were greeted by the friendly neighbouring slip captiain who quickly toured us through the ins and outs of the boat, being sure to note the obligitory safety features (lifevests, fire extinguishers, etc). Good to know and absolutely never needed. After the tour, he provided a list of his favourite restaurants and interesting sights along the Upper Keys and their marker location along the Overseas Highway. If you love camping, this is a wonderful upgrade. All the amenities you need, and very comfortable for two. If you are used to a 5-star hotel, you might not enjoy the somewhat closer quarters of a sailboat. We spent two wonderful weeks in the Upper Keys and were quite easily able to travel to Key West and Miami Beach for day trips. Before our first outing to Key West, our neighbour again provided some suggestions for us to visit. We loved it so much, we went twice. Some days we decided to stay closer to home base, and there were several beaches within walking or biking distance. We borrowed some fishing gear and were able to fish right off the back of the sailboat. We were quite excited that we easily caught several fish each time we fished. For the adventurous, there are snorkel, scuba, kayaking and paddleboarding rental places nearby. For a romantic getaway, there is nothing like sitting on the back of a sailboat enjoying a beautiful moonlight evening, while listening to some soft jazz with a glass of wine and gently rocking as the waves brush along the side of the boat. All in all, a wonderful experience. I'm hooked!

Red Grouper Houseboat Stock Island Marina

4 of 5
A little difficult to find initially as we were unable to download the directions but once we were in the marina, it was easy to navigate the site and park etc. Overall we were impressed with the friendly staff, the information and help they gave us was very useful. The Red Grouper houseboat was exactly as the description and it was very clean and well appointed. Because we wanted to spend time in Key West centre we could have used a more frequent courtesy bus schedule but it didn't really detract from our overall impression and the enjoyable experience.
