First things first, with the W Home, Melanie and Tom created a wonderful place in paradies!
We flew over from Germany to Miami and took a rental car right at the airport. The car ride to the little ferry station takes about 2.5 hours. Make sure though to plan some time for grocery shopping as well. There are two supermarkets very close to the departure point and both offer "boat-packing" of your goods. Directions to those and many more information is included in the letter you get from Melanie. You can park your car right at the ferry company. The short bus ride to the ferry and the trip over to North Captiva takes only about 30 minutes and you already get a good idea about how beautiful this area is. Once you arrived on the island you will be picked up with a golf cart and transferred to the house (3-4 minutes).
The house is beautifully located at a small lake and fully equipped with everything you need (or not need) during your stay. Kitchen, grill, TVs, Wlan, washing machine, dryer. The three bedrooms offer enough space for a big family. The golf cart also belongs to the house and would deserve a review by itself. We highly recommend to use it to explore the island.
The island itself is truely remote. Houses only exist on the northern part, whereas the southern part is a protected nature reserve and can only be accessed by foot. A walk down there is a must though, beautiful beaches and wildlife, including rare birds, turtles and if you are more lucky than us even bobcats. The habitated part of the island bears the safety harbor club with a pool area you can access, few but excellent restaurants and a small shop where you can get the most crucial things like milk, bread etc.
My wife, our seven months old daughter and I went there in November and enjoyed every minute. We will certainly come back!
