BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS, GREAT HOUSE, AND PLENTY OF SPACE!

4 of 5
The Pros: The listing information is very accurate. The house appears almost exactly as shown only some of the furniture has been rearranged. The property is well maintained and clean. Our host, Donna, was very pleasant and gave us a thorough walk-through upon arrival. The house is very large, there was plenty of space for 10 of us. There could have easily have been 4 more. Home is in a quiet residential neighborhood, very nice. We found the home well furnished and very comfortable, great for our 3 small children (6, 4, & 2) Room for our 31 ft boat at the dock, and boat trailer in the driveway (but you better be good at driving it or park it out front!) Tennis court and basketball goal in great shape. Sadly, it was too hot to play much. The smallish pool was nice and clean and there were plenty of pool toys to use, and LOTS of lounge chairs on the pool deck. Also a Weber Genesis grill. Bedrooms were nice, plenty large enough, beds comfortable, linens were clean. Screen porch was a great area with lights and ceiling fans for comfort, but it was still hot. The Tidal pool was pretty fun. You feed the fish with a cup of food every day. The fish would follow you as you walk around it thinking it was time to be fed. I saw snappers, lobsters, parrotfish, remoras, a couple groupers, and more in the pond. Fishing off the dock was great for the kids for little snappers and grunts, I set out a big line for sharks. Had several run-offs and caught one small bonnet-head. A few of us went snorkeling right around the dock, and tubing a few hundred yards out. Cons: Donna explicitly and strongly cautioned us about keeping the glass sliding doors (all exterior doors for that matter) shut. She went to great lengths to let us know that others that had complained about the air-conditioning, but that the issue was always leaving the doors open and letting the cold out and heat in. We soon discovered that the AC unit in the main living area and kitchen was wholly inadequate for the heat load and space. We were extremely careful about the doors. The AC just couldn't keep up from about 2 till about 9. Finally it quit entirely. Even though we loved the house, I would not stay again until the AC unit is replaced with a large enough unit. Once that is taken care of, the house will be practically perfect.

DEFINITELY AN OUTSTANDING HOME-AWAY HOME.

5 of 5
I would like to thank Mark and Lynn for sharing this outstanding home with our family. We have visited Marathon Key before and was impressed with the previous rentals. However, this property definitely provided our family a very comfortable home to stay. Specifically, we loved the large and private backyard/dock/tiki hut where we spent every morning enjoying our coffees and every sunset in the afternoon. The tidal pool is huge (much bigger than the picture shown) and we enjoyed snorkeling in it. The dock is just perfect for us since we rented 27-ft boat and it's so easy to doc. We also enjoyed the three kayaks provided by the home and rented the paddle board from the shop at the corner of the street. They delivered to right to our door. The inside of the house is just outstanding. The kitchen is very updated and roomy for us to prepare our drinks and meals. We loved the coffee maker and blender. The cooking utensils are of good quality. The new refrigerator worked really well for us since it gives us plenty of room for drinks and water bottles. The A/C worked extremely well considering the weather in middle of July. The only two items which I hope that the owners will keep an eye on for future renters: 1. Bath towels - there is only one set to use and it should be carefully cleaned (and replace when they are wore out). We ended up buying our own towels. 2. Water pressure in the main bathroom is quite weak. My family rented two other houses in the area (same week) and the water pressure are much stronger in their units. I would definitely stay here (and recommend to others) again since it is one of the best properties in Marathon. Thank you Mark and Lynn again for sharing their home with us. Thien Doan

EXCEEDED EXPECTATION- CAN'T SAY ENOUGH!

5 of 5
To qualify my review- Im picky, to a fault, & rarely do experiences meet expectation let alone exceed them. The home, the area, the homeowners were simply amazing. I'll start with the home- Ive learned that with VRBO & like companies have some homeowners that will overstate their property, location & oversell with misleading text & pictures. I found this out resulting from a less than ideal experience with a vacation home we rented. As a result, I've made it a practice to contact the homeowner before booking. The communication was great email and phone calls. I asked about the pool, the landing/dock area and proximity to the beach. We have 3 kids ages 5,7,9 so the safety, pool size and beach proximity were essential. Over the course of the calls we started a dialog that made me feel like I was family! Their home did not at all feel like a vacation rental. Perfectly equipped kitchen, washer dryer, furniture, electronics (tv, sate, wifi, dvd), beds, bedding etc. The views are amazing, we saw dolphin daily & a manatee + had coffee each am starring out into the atlantic over crazy blue/green waters. Pool is perfectly sized as is the patio area. There is an amazing tree that must have a nickname b/c it's such an iconic, beautiful part of the outdoor area. As far as the beaches & location, if you know the keys then you know marathon is ideal. Went to Key west for the day (hour drive) & we went to Bahia Honda (state park/beaches) for the day- (10-15 minutes). Key west with a family is fun to visit but not to stay. The beaches & some of the scene can be less than desirable for kids or teens in key west. Bahia Honda was outstanding & after traveling much of the caribbean I can speak with a little bit of experience. Stay away from the designated beach area & get lost on the less traveled beaches, you won't regret it. Didn't make it to Sombrero beach which is a 5min drive & the local favorite. Local eateries were great & reasonably priced. We ate at the stuffed pig (don't be fooled by the name) which was freaking awesome, the sunset grill- decent food, great location & atmosphere. hogfish grill- really not worth the drive but great food & service. Conch Republic in Key West- overall was our fav for dinner & The Stuffed Pig was our fav for breakfast/lunch. The food quality, variety, prep, portions & service were all impeccable! Can't say enough about this home, the area & the homeowner. We loved the home, Marathon & are already making plans to return!
