First and foremost, the Ocean Village ambience. After a good morning's wander along the tide line of the Atlantic, we returned via a stairway over the dunes to the swimming pool (ample, clean, quiet, beautiful). There we happened upon a small group of gracious Golden Girls floating around like bobbers on a fishing rod and exchanging the latest news with fellow swimmers. Younger couples with preschool offspring completed the multi-generational aquatic set. The pool's Tikibar poured us cocktails at a friendly price.
Outside of the guarded gateway to this resort, the good life continued. Three minute's drive down Ocean Drive took us to Archie's, an indoor-oiutdoor, Pirate themed establishment. Rugged bikers joined young love birds and happy families celebrating Mother's Day in listening to a live rock combo. This is the way things go on South Hutchinson Island. Our spirits rose even higher while enjoying a taco on a supremely located terrace at water's edge (the bar named 'On the Edge') as a few dolphins paraded ino the lagoon. A great attraction is 'Captain Bob's Place', located at the end of the causeway connecting mainland en island, both for fresh oysters and the Captain's exhibition of 17th century coins and precious stones, treasure he once gathered from a Spanish wreck off the Bahamas while still on active sea duty. Surprising that this figure straight out of Hemingway, merely appearing from time to time to keep an eye on the new owners of this easy-going restaurant, is as yet not widely known. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Hutchinson Island itself is as yet an undiscovered gem.
Returning from all this hustle and bustle was the moment that we truly realized how marvelous the condo is. We have seen a great deal of Florida to date but never experienced an accomodation five times more spacious than (for example) a Holiday Inn hotel room: it is comfortably cool (airco and overhead fans) in stead of dependent on a loudly bellowing airco blasting a cold hurricane over your Double Queen accommodation. The condo has a spacious living room and a well-equipped kitchen, with a panoramic view of both sea and golf course, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a magnificant lanai for as the sun sets and rises, and all this for a price significantly lower than (for example) Holiday Inn likes to extract from your credit card. So, five stars from us.
O yes, we almost forgot: you can always park your car in the shade.
