At Home in Rome

5 of 5
In Dec. 2014 the University administration, where I work, arranged for me to travel to Rome and insure the safe return of our study abroad students. The assignment was sweetened by the opportunity to have my wife accompany me. The university made all the arrangements for our travel and accommodations. I was given a choice of apartments from among four options. I immediately delegated that choice to my wife. I am happy to report that she chose wisely. We had the pleasure of spending ten fabulous days in a beautiful second floor apartment in Trastevere. Trastevere is the 13th rione of Rome, on the west bank of the Tiber, south of Vatican City. Its name comes from the Latin Trans Tiberim, meaning literally "beyond the Tiber". I doubt that there is a more charming medieval neighborhood on the planet. I would encourage all visitors to Italy to experience Trastevere. Our experience was significantly enriched by our beautiful second floor apartment. We had a spacious bedroom with ample closet space and large dresser, with plenty of drawers. The bathroom was small but quite adequate. The kitchen was complete with all appliances, coffee maker and tea pot. The living room, with TV, could seat 10 people. Perhaps, most important, the apartment was equipped with wifi. Personally, this was a huge benefit for me, as I received over 100 scholarship essays, from potential students, that needed to be read and evaluated prior to my return. This became my late night and early morning activity. Our landlady was a most accommodating and welcoming host. She made certain that the apartment was perfect in every way. Meeting and getting to know her was the “icing on the cake” and helped to make the experience special in every way. We will miss our precious apartment and incredible experience. But, the fond memories will last a life time. Arrivederci ROMA!

Cote D'Azur Serenity

5 of 5
When you open the door of this lovely modern apartment perched on the hillside overlooking Villefranche sur Mer, the view of the turquoise and sapphire blue of the Mediterranean Sea through the wall of windows, will take your breath away! The initial glimpse will transport you to a peaceful, relaxed, serene vacation state-of-mind that one only experiences in the South of France. This newly renovated, light and airy apartment has simple European style and all the comforts of home. Upon arrival, my family and I immediately took refuge on the huge balcony with a cool bottle of rose and sumptuous French bread, cheese, and olives. The well equipped kitchen allowed us to
prepare many home cooked meals made with France's finest and freshest ingredients found at the local outdoor markets, bakeries, and butchers. When we didn't want to cook, we had no trouble finding an outstanding bistro, restaurant, creperie, or gourmet take-out in the area. Villefranche has a large pebble beach, and the surrounding communities have sandy and rocky beaches. Each beach is easily accessible by foot, car, or bus and all are within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and other attractions. Renting a boat is easy even for those who don't consider themselves seafaring aficionados. For the more experienced mariner, there are speedboats, sailboats, and scull rentals. If scuba diving is your pleasure, there are plenty of diving expeditions .

For sightseeing, there is the beautiful city of Nice, the port of Antibes, and the enchanting medieval village of Eze. For those interested in gambling there are the casinos at Beaulieu or Monte Carlo. One can never be bored in this beautiful setting on the Cote d’Azur.

But whatever you choose, whether swimming, sailing, walking, or sightseeing, it is always wonderful to return to this peaceful, beautiful apartment and relax on the balcony. From breathtaking sunrises to the pink sunsets, the view from from this apartment never fails to please. For us, the full moon was an added treat as it bathed the entire inlet, filled with yachts, cruise ships, and small boats, with a soft pale purple haze. We all passed such a fabulous vacation that we found it incredibly difficult to leave.
