This house, and El Salvador in general, exceeded all our expectations. I traveled to El Zonte with a group of girlfriends on a surf trip. We felt completely safe everywhere we went, even driving at night (renting a car is highly recommended, as there isn't much in El Zonte and you'll have to drive to the nearby towns for restaurants, markets, etc.).
The surf break is 100 yards from the house and had perfect surf every morning with the friendliest locals in the lineup. At low tide, the largest tidepool in front of the house becomes a sandy-bottom tub that's ideal for soaking and watching the sunset every night. When we weren't on the beach, we took advantage of the pool in the yard which was almost the same temperature as the sea (about 80-85 degrees!).
Carlos (the caretaker) and his family live on the property, but always gave us privacy. He was invaluable in helping us rent surfboards from Olas Permanentes down the beach, breaking open fresh coconuts for us to drink, and escorting us to the waterfalls at Tamanique (where he found us a local guide to take us on the trails). He was definitely one of the most memorable parts of our trip, and by the end of the week, we felt like he was family.
It should be noted that in the photos, the white building is not for rent. However, we had full access to the common areas under the white building (hammocks, lounge seating, dining area) and to our knowledge, it's an in-law unit for when the owner Evelyn's family is in town. The rental home is the one with the wooden beams and the open-air bar, living room, and dining room. It's very clean and comfortable, and Carlos or his wife did daily housekeeping in the common areas. We had full run of the entire yard, which is very well-kept and full of lush grass and coconut palms. Stairs lead down to the outdoor shower (which we much preferred over the indoor shower!) and the black sand beach. The home was a sanctuary; very quiet and secluded, with only the sound of waves crashing.
Evelyn helped arrange a private chef to come to the house and cook for us all day (which was a real treat -- the chef and his assistant were completely professional and made the most amazing food we had all week in El Salvador) and also a masseuse who set up a table in the yard overlooking the ocean. We were so spoiled! We would definitely come back and stay at Evelyn's beautiful home again.
