Home away from home

5 of 5
This was a family vacation for us, with three kids in their 20's. We normally rent a house rather than staying at a resort. Compared to other houses we have rented, this was well laid out, nicely decorated and in great shape. Carl-Phillipe and Natalie have done a great job of making this a home, and having them there to meet us was a big plus. We contemplated renting a car but decided not to after reading blog posts on trip advisor. Having Josue' pick us up, take us to the market and deliver us safely was a godsend. DO NOT rent a car. The grocery store on the way from STI is impressive - stock up there for the week, as the local store has only the basics. A word of fair warning though, I called my credit card companies before leaving to make sure they knew my travel plans but both still denied the first charge I tried to make, which happened to be at the grocery store. Fortunately there was an ATM there and we were able to get pesos to pay the bill. Take lots of sunscreen. The bugs were not bad, mosquitos in the early morning and evening so take something for that as well. We were able to sleep without the a/c and it was 90+ each day. The beds are very comfortable and each room has a fan. However, I would recommend taking ear plugs for the occasional impromptu party along the beach and the ceiling fans can be noisy if the system is running on battery power. I would agree with a previous reviewer, the house is even nicer than the pictures would suggest. Punta Rucia is not a resort town. The residents are very poor and make do with what they have. If you are looking for manicured grounds and pretty buildings, this is not for you. However, if you enjoy seeing other cultures, this is a great adventure. The Punta Rucia residents all seemed kind and gracious, so we never felt unsafe or unwelcome. Our biggest challenge was the language. None of us spoke spanish, and few people in the area speak english. Klieby (boat captain) really does not speak english, although we were able to communicate and he was very helpful. Alfonse speaks french creole but we were also generally able to communicate well enough to get our point across. The manager and one of the servers at the resort next door (Anthony!) were very helpful with translations. In all, it was a great vacation for us.

Wonderful :@)

My husband and I traveled to Puerto Plata back in 2011. We came across information on a villa through VRBO and were jubilant that we choose to use Leslie and Bob. This was the first time that we traveled to Dominican Republic, but we were pleased that we choose this location to celebrate my husband birthday. Leslie and Bob give us so much information about the location before we arrived there, and they were happy to answer any questions that we had (and boy did we have questions). Do remember when you enter DR there is a $10 charge you have to pay at the airport. When we arrived at the airport, there was a few hiccups but that was taken care of with just a phone call. The driver we encountered at the airport we so polite he made sure that we were happy and comfortable. The driver stopped off at a local spot so that we could get beers and coconut water .. what a way to start out vacations. When we arrived at the LVHC the driver took us the VIP check in .. this is different from the other check in location. During our check in process some of the information that they had was not the same as was confirmed by Leslie and Bob but in the package of the “Helpful Tips and Suggestion for Your Vacation” we were told to make sure that we had a copy of our confirmation letter and e-mail correspondence. When the receptionist said, we could not get the gold bands that was taken care of with just a call to Leslie and Bob. During out check in process we made reservations for all the restaurants we wanted to eat at. ( We eat at a different restaurant every night). Once we were checked in we got our golf cart and out bags were taken to the villa.(we had a 3 bedroom 3 1/2 bath all to ourselves).. Boy oh boy were we in for a treat. The villa was beautiful, we had breakfast cooked for us every morning poolside. The chamber maid was so helpful, and so was everyone we encountered at the villa. The Sunday night VIP beach party was the bomb. Hubby and I had so much fun, and there were so many choices of food from around the world. One of the nights, there was a BBQ cooked for hubby and I at our villa poolside and we were waited on hand and foot, compliments of Leslie and Bob, together with a bottle of wine. Did I mention that we had alcohol of our choice delivered to our villa every day. One of the days a sale rep came by our villa and asked if we wanted a tour, we did and told them after we were not interested.. They were still polite.
