Playa Bonita is peaceful, beautiful, very nice for swimming, and safe for children. Walking to the west, the waves are a little rougher and good for beginning surfers, boogie boards and body surfing. A couple of days were more calm and people were paddle boarding as well. If you continue around the point, you find a long stretch of calm beach, good for finding shells and beach combing and eventually bigger waves of Playa Coson. Overall, the beaches of Samana are among the most beautiful I've seen.
The pool is excellent and close enough to the beach that you still hear and feel the crash of the surf. There is a small bar where you can pick up a cocktail in the evening and there appears to be a restaurant under construction. Other small bars and restaurants are within walking distance down a well lit path to the west, however to reach Las Terranes and its many restaurant options requires a car.
The condo is well constructed and nicely finished. We slept comfortably with windows open and never turned on the a/c, although as one reviewer noted the beds are a little firm. The kitchen is well equipped with a small range, oven, refrigerator, dishes, utensils, and pans. We cooked very little, but it was nice to have snacks and beverages on hand.
Bath towels and beach towels (4) were available, but there is no daily housekeeping, so we ended up doing frequent loads of laundry in the small stackable washer-dryer located in the unit. There also are no beach chairs available, so you will be sitting in the sand when not in the water.
Overall, this was a nice place to stay as advertised. This was our first VRBO experience. It was nice to have freedom from typical resort restaurants and activities. However, if you value daily maid service, beach amenities, onsite dining and concierge, then this may not be the best fit. I also would highly recommend renting a car if staying on Playa Bonita so you can venture into town to buy supplies and eat out.
Day trips to Playa El Valle, cascade El Limon, Las Galleras, Playa Rincon, and Playa Fronton were amazing. We went boating with Playita Sub to snorkel and visit playas Fronton and Rincon. Driving in the DR is an adventure, but if you stay alert and enjoy the views, you will see people and places unlike anywhere else. We also enjoyed playas Ballenas, Las Terranes, and El Limon, the sailing club, Mi Corazon and its bakery downstairs. We loved our Dominican adventure.
