Wouldn't Have Wanted to be Anywhere Else

5 of 5
We took a chance on booking this property. At the time there weren't many reviews. From beginning to end, we have nothing but terrific things to say both about the property & the owner, Melvin & his assistant, Marie. The pictures speak for themselves, the property is gorgeous, decorated with local art tastefully displayed everywhere. The apartment is so open it almost reminds me of a lanai in Hawaii. You feel one with nature. Four of us were there for 12 days and didn't want to leave. If you book be sure & visit the Jumbo Grocery in the adjoining town. The prices are similar to what are available here in the US, but the fruits & vegetables are much more fresh. We enjoyed fresh pineapple, banana pina coladas made using the apartment blender every day. Evening comes and the views out the apartment balcony are gorgeous. Soft palm trees are silhouetted against the ocean, the beautiful pool in the forefront. This complex has two twin pools & one of the pools is right in front of your unit. Soft breezes flow through the apartment all day long this time of the year & we didn't feel the need to turn on the air conditioning, not even once. It is there if needed though which is comforting. In case you don't want to cook, there are several restaurants right across & down the street. We had a car & used parking provided at the unit & drove everywhere. And yes, the driving is crazy. There is so much to do I can't begin to list what is available. One day we toured Santo Domingo & met up with Melvin & Marie for coffee. My sister said it best about Melvin, "What a charmer". We snorkeled, went diving and hiked in Bayshibe. Went to Carnival in Punta Cana, went whale watching on the Samana Bay, went to a national park south of the Samana Bay & of course took time to just relax at Marbella. This is an owner owned property which means during the 12 days we were there, during the week, there was hardly anyone there except staff. We felt we had our own private place to enjoy. No jostling for chairs here. Just a peaceful, beautiful environment to enjoy. The weekends had a few more people, but again just a handful. I can't say enough about this place & the Dominican people in general. Unlike many places in the Caribbean, we noticed no one who had a attitude, other than to be helpful & pleasant. You won't be disappointed if you choose to stay here. We liked them so much we have invited them to come & stay with us, anytime. They feel like family.

The Pictures Do Not Lie!

5 of 5
I'm writing this review while sitting on the balcony overlooking the pristine waters of the Carribean. This place, simply put, is paradise. Jorge, Ms. Lillibeth and Socrates made the entire booking, transportation & check-in process as simple as can be. The property is beyond clean and well maintained. Beds are comfy, bathrooms, kitchen and living space immaculate. Couple of tips for the first timers coming to Juan Dolio. Best restaurants in the area are El Agave, El Meson & Pekara. El Agave is immediately across the boulevard from the condo. EXCELLENT Mexican food right down to the house-made tortillas. Enormous portions, excellent value - have a margarita, it's worth it!. El Meson is about a 5 minute walk to the left of the complex. They have excellent seafood - we enjoyed the paella mixta for two. El Meson is a bit more expensive, but worth the splurge. PLEASE go to Pekara for breakfast! This little bakery/cafe is right behind Cafe Bistro on the side street immediately in front of the condo complex. The bread here is worth the entire trip to the Dominican Republic. I think the water does magical things to the crust. Anyway, EXCELLENT value for a darned good meal - Great way to start your day. There is a small grocery store also immediately across the street; easy to get to, but limited stock. You may want to pack a few staples if you are a picky eater - or just enjoy the local restaurants. Will be purchasing Rosetta Stone Spanish lessons so that we are better equipped to communicate next year :). The local vendors and business people are very nice; English is not widely spoken, though. No worries if you have access to Google Translate on your phones. It worked wonders for us. The only negative we might have is that they are working on beach reclamation (which is totally fine & understandable) during the weekdays, so there is heavy machinery driving up & down the beach. Not such a hardship. It is wonderful to know that they are maintaining their precious resource. We will be making this an annual trip. We LOVE working with Jorge and know that the property will be in perfect order next time we come. Enough typing now... the beach is calling my name!

Really great place

5 of 5
Well we just got back from a great Dominican holiday! We landed in punts Cana, rented a car and drove the 1.5 hrs to Juan dolio. Really great drive. Driving the DR is no different than any other major highway - if you've driven the autobahn then you're right on target here. Small town driving is a whole new ball game; honestly, you can't be cautious, just drive like you're in traffic on the DVP or the jersy turnpike. The condo - amazing! Just wonderful! It's was so much bigger than we thought it's literally 20 meters to the beach. We really cannot fault a single thing! Security is tight, which is good but really every local wmeet was super great. Most want to sell you something - that can be expensive but you can negotiate with them - plus it's their livelihood so pony up once or twice. We took our Kia for a spin to San Pedro to the Jumbo (like walmart) for groceries and supplies, 10 min away; Boca Chica 20 min away for the beaches and the ole super market (it's fancy, like lawblaws) but the meat was great quality! We drove to santo Domingo - no different than New York or Toronto, except you need to be super aggressive - I used lots of arm waving and and thank you hand gestures. I've also driven in Beijing and Tokyo, it's comparable. The beach was super great - it's man made and a bit choppy but it's well done and lovely to lay in a beach bed and listen to the waves drinking a 2 litre bottle of beer. We were 3 people, the beach, maximum 8 people - it was so quiet and wonderful! We will be here again but for 2 maybe 3 weeks.
