For our 7th stay at Casa Sammie we opted for something different-we visited during the last two weeks in November-tail end of the rainy season and we loved it. Yes it rained while we were there, mostly in the afternoon, but the rain never interfered with the enjoyment of our trip. We planned our outings for early morning, which we usually do anyway and we were not rained out once. Did not try dancing in the rain-did try swimming in the rain in the Casa Sammie pool, a wonderful experience though it cannot surpass a full moon night swim. Went for a walk in the rain-a refreshing experience. So if you are planning a trip to Casa Sammie and December to March are booked-try November, you will enjoy it! For this trip we had our friend Sandi join us for her first trip to Costa Rica. One of the pleasures of Tarcoles is the ability to mingle with the locals in a non-tourist setting. Sandi is an avid bingo player so on a Sunday afternoon we went to a fundraising bingo at the Tarcoles school. To be able to make a small contribution to the local community while having an enjoyable outing was heart warming. Special thanks to Lourdes for translating during the bingo games. Having Sandi with us for her first visit gave us an opportunity to re-experience our first trip to Costa Rica in 2007. We did the Jungle Crocodile Safari boat trip again-it was better than we remember from 2007. We had a knowledgeable guide, saw Howler monkeys for the first time, lots of birds and of course crocodiles. We found a great guide, Maurice Vazquez, for a trek in Carara Park. The best way to experience the park is with a guide. Maurice took us on a trail in the north part of the park which offered great opportunity for wildlife viewing - saw Howler monkeys again. Maurice did a great job taking photos through his spotting scope using my Blackberry camera. Keep in mind that these two great outings are only a 10 minute drive from Casa Sammie! Maurice Vazquez: great knowledge+good English=excellent guide. We left his contact information in the Casa Sammie book. Maurice also contributed to a new #1 highlight for our Costa Rica vacations. Maurice took us on a night hike on Playa Heramosa. While a thunderstorm raged far out on the Pacific we got to see a sea turtle laying eggs-repeating a ritual that has gone on for thousands of years. An experience hard to describe in words. What Costa Rica has to offer within a short distance of Casa Sammie never ceases to amaze. We shall return!
