A boutique hotel without the boutique price

5 of 5
There were 6 of of meeting in Jaco from the US and Greece. I travel to Costa Rica a couple times a year but this was only my second time in Jaco. Jack (hotel owner) had us picked up in San Jose at the airport. I stayed in the penthouse and we had the entire 3rd floor. The hotel has about 25 rooms and suites in all. All of the rooms had outstanding AC. Jack is from the US and the hotel is finished out more to the quality and style of something from the states than Costan Rican standards. By that I mean the air was always cold the water pressure was good and everything worked all the time. This is not the norm for this country. The Internet access was better than expected and worked 95% of the time. What it takes to make a great property is great people. Hotel 9 has them. Mariana met us on arrival and was there to take care of all our needs. She booked tours for us, called us taxis, gave us recommendations and anything else we needed. Dariela cooked us two of the best dinners we have ever had in Costa Rica. Tatiana and Nela waited on us night and day no matter how much grief we gave them. Word of warning: Don't play drinking games with Nela. The hotel is as on the beach as any hotel in Jaco could be. From the pool to the surf was 100 steps. There are surfboards of all sizes for the guests as well as bicycles (we didn't use). The pool and hot tub were immaculate all the time. They did our laundry for free (leave a big tip). Did I mention the restaurant was incredible. Try the chicken piccata. There was a guard at the main gate most of the time. Unless I was leaving for a night on the town I rarely locked my room. There are a couple things I would change. The restaurant was only open from 7am to 9am and then 6pm to 10pm. I would have liked a cheeseburger by the pool for lunch :). I think if I had asked they would have done it anyway but I felt guilty as it was for rolling into breakfast at 8:58 each morning. The door between the Penthouse living room and the adjoining bedroom is thin. My friends were in that room but they go to bed at 9 and I turn in at 2. They were tired of hearing us carry on and by the third night were telling us so. It would be great to have a small store in the hotel that sold snacks and drinks or minibars in the room. Not only would I go back but I will. I am already looking at the calendar. The surf across from the hotel is great for beginners.
