Our family of four (incl 2 teen boys) loved staying at Casa Carole! This was our first trip to CR, and we weren't sure where to stay, but we lucked out! We arrived 2 weeks before Christmas, and it was very quiet- pretty much had the place to ourselves! We always seek small, quaint & quiet locations and this was perfect! As others have mentioned, it was about a 10 minute walk to the beach, but we didn't mind as we almost always saw new (& friendly) critters along the way. One day the road was overflowing with tiny red crabs. Not sure what made that day any different, but highly interesting and fun!
The beach was amazing. Wide and expansive, with thousands of corkscrew shells on the beach at low tide. The conditions were perfect for boogie boarding a couple times a day, and great for long walks. The sand is quite compact at the water, so easy to walk on. We loved walking near the channel crossing to Tamarindo, as it always seemed full of crabs, fish and birds at low tide.
The house itself was very clean, tidy and well stocked. The property manager was helpful, friendly and very responsive the one night we ran out of propane for the oven while cooking dinner. Problem solved very fast..barely time to finish the drink I had pored while expecting a wait! The doors and windows were well secured with options for locking at night. The only small complaint would be that the living room furniture isn't very comfy, but it's built in, so not too many options I guess. We ate most of our meals on the outdoor patio and enjoyed the hammock.
We ate out a couple times, including the BBQ next door at Seven's which was pretty tasty. They also have a small store if you need essentials, but expensive as one would expect at this type of store. We drove 10+mins to a great local grocery that was well stocked and priced. We walked to Hotel Bula one day and arranged a water taxi to Tamarindo. That was a fun, short river boat ride, and we enjoyed lunch at a brew pub there while watching the surfers. Tamarindo was lovely for a few hours, but glad we were staying in quiet Playa Grande!
Unfortunately we didn't see any turtles, but Casa Carole at Playa Grande was still our favorite location. We spent another week down south in Nosara, which was equally interesting, but we preferred the beaches of Playa Grande. Thank you again Carole, for being great to deal with and letting travelers share your home. We hope to be back one day!
