Our Honeymoon Paradise

5 of 5
My husband Tim + I visited this gorgeous property for our honeymoon & I cannot say enough about how incredible it was! After 6 months of stress & extreme planning for the wedding, I was looking for a place of solitude and relaxation where we could enjoy being newlyweds...wow, this is it! The moment you enter the home there is a sense of peace & tranquility here that is second to none. The Balinese open air design of the home allows the landscape to be a part of the house rather than being two separate spaces. The pool is the perfect refuge from the hot Costa Rican sun and when the fog rolls in and the afternoon storms hit, the hammock is the perfect place to chill out & watch the wild weather. Tim & I enjoyed the local farmer's market in Atenas and cooking in the beautiful, well appointed kitchen for most of our meals. Leticia the property manager was so sweet and helped to answer all of our questions. We took a couple of day trips to the beach and to the La Paz waterfalls and Poaz Volcano. Honestly though, our favorite part of the trip was the chance to relax and unwind. We saw so many gorgeous birds, butterflies, cows in the valley below, and even white faced monkeys who would tap on the windows of the house in the evenings. The privacy was wonderful and we always felt very safe. The home is super clean and the gardens are perfectly maintained. Altogether, we would 100% recommend this property to anyone! Pura Vida!!

Great little casita!

5 of 5
The casita was quaint and clean and within walking distance to Atenas. Pat and John were wonderful hosts and gave us helpful information about the area and culture. We enjoyed the oranges and lemons from the trees in their yard and the sunsets were spectacular from the rooftop patio. After the sun sets the city lights can be seen on the horizon and the firefly's come alive in the soccer field next door reminding us of childhood days gone by. The first day there, Pat and John drove us to the local grocery so we could stock up while they enjoyed a cup of coffee at the grocery café, and we stopped in for a few more groceries a couple of days later and couldn't resist a cup of coffee and apple cake on the way out, it was delicious! We also visited El Toledo Organic Coffee Farm in San Isidro, a must visit. It was an amazing tour that took us through the entire process from seed to cup and Gerardo's family was very warm and welcoming. It is great to see a family farm interested in balance of nature, sustainable and eco friendly practices and making fantastic coffee. We stopped in almost daily at Gelly's across from the park in the center of Atenas when the rain showers passed through town to enjoy a cappuccino, gelato or crepes. We visited Antano's in town for the traditional lunch meal, casado (beans, rice, meat, salad and plantain and a tostada) and various sodas to sample empanadas filled with meat, vegetables or fruit. Kay's Gringo Postres was filled with interesting stories and local information from Kay herself and the new owner Lisa was gracious and welcoming, along with numerous other folks who shared their stories of moving to and living in Atenas. The park in the center of town is a great place to hang out, people watch and pass the day. Everyone was in town was super friendly unless they were behind the wheel.... and then it was like Mr. Toad's wild ride, but that's another story, you just have to be here to believe it. All in all, a great getaway, and my only hesitation about recommending this place is that if word gets out it may be booked up the next time we want to visit Atenas. Thank you Pat and John for the wonderful memories and the beginning of a new adventure.

Wonderful Oasis!

5 of 5
Wonderful! We stayed at El Castillo in March 2013 & loved every bit of it! The property has everything you need. All updated & not just nice, but very nice with so many little touches that put it over the top. The views are amazing! The wildlife in the trees is just what you want when you go to a tropical paradise. It is a bit off the beaten path, which was perfect for us. Yes the roads are a bit rough, but if you’re driving through the Arenal area you should already be prepared for that. We met Pizza John at his restaurant which was a nice respite after a long drive. He led us to the property & we enjoyed his company so much that we asked him to stay for a drink. The owners knew we were coming from our Costa Rican wedding & had a bottle of champagne waiting for us – another very nice touch. We took advantage of the local convenience store & restaurant & had everything we needed. We had no problems getting to & from the property, just be aware that you need a bit more time, but it’s worth it to have your own oasis. Pizza John arranged a horseback ride with the local guy (meaning the guy down the street, a true local) who met us at the house in the morning with horses. Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time here. We would absolutely recommend this property!
