Our Escape At Waramaug

5 of 5
This is not going to be short since we have a lot to say about this property and the people who own it (who were our neighbors for a year). The context: We are Northern Californians who had relocated to NYC for work. After 1.5 years in NY we decided we wanted (ok NEEDED) to find a weekend get away that was more than 2 nights at an Inn or a hotel. We are not Hamptons people (beautiful but too crowded for us). After much searching we landed on Litchfield county with a clear mandate - easy lake access on a powerboat friendly lake (we are avid water-skiers). We found this house on home away, made a time to see it on one of our regular Hopkins Inn/Falls Village Inn weekends and instantly fell in love, deciding to rent it year round. The house is perfect - small enough that it is easy to zip in and out of on the weekends without a lot of clean up, the property is gorgeous and Al and Claire (the owners who live in the main house) are wonderful. At the end of the year rental we decided to move back to San Francisco (had we stayed in NY we would have never given up this place). It was hard to leave this little gem and the new friends we made in Al and Claire. A few facts: - super easy drive from NYC. We would leave NYC every Friday night after dinner around 8 pm and leave CT every Sunday night around 8 pm. 95% of the time it took 1:45 hours each way (we were in Chelsea 20’s/7th Ave) - the house is beyond amazing in the spring/summer/fall time (new england lake living - need i say more) - the house is incredibly special in the winter - most of the houses on Waramaug are second homes and are not used year round. We came up every single weekend and skied at Catamount, Butternut (each 1 hour) and Jiminy Peak (1:45 hrs), went for long walks around the lake and enjoyed the slow pace of a rural new england winter and of course lots and lots of lazy days reading and cooking in front of the fire. - we had a ski boat in the water in early May (4mm wetsuit required!) and skied up until the day we moved out at the end of September. You could very easily ski until late October if you were so inclined. Waramaug has virtually no boat traffic since it is more or less a private lake. -Fantastic restaurants around the area - CT, Arethusa, Olivia’s, The Mayflower Inn, GW Tavern and of course The White Horse Tavern just to mention a few - Al was always responsive when we needed something or had a question - Highly recommend would be an understatement

THE BEST!

5 of 5
We found this warm and most charming place on this website and fell in love with it the very first time we walked in 4 yrs ago. It exceeded any of our expectations. Our initial stay was 2 weeks followed by one month the following year and the past 2 years, we have been coming here for 6 weeks and loving every minute of it! It has great views, peaceful and beautiful setting and the best thing is, the owner is the nicest man in the world. We are very happy, don’t want to leave and plan to return next year.

Super cozy and super convenient

5 of 5
The cottage is exceptionally comfortable in a very comfortable area. It's a good place to go on walks because the beach is not far away. The facilities are very neat and well-kept. There is a treacherous step as you enter the front door, but it is only treacherous if you do not follow the well-placed instructions to watch your step. Car access works best for getting back toward New Haven. Also, there are a good selection of grocery stores just outside the comfortable walking distance for many people. This cottage would work very well for people who have relatives or friends nearby who do have enough living space to fit in the guests. It is a great place.
