Perfect "home away from home"

5 of 5
Our 10 day stay at the "River House" was exceptional! We came to Connecticut from Calgary Alberta, Canada, over 2500 miles away!!! Our son, wife & 2 boys, 9 & 6 , our niece, hubby & I stayed at the house for our visit for our daughter's wedding. The house is only a few minutes from St. Clement's Castle where the reception was held. Although we were quite busy with last minute wedding preparations, we managed to take in a few attractions. The boys went to a NY Yankees & Boston Red Sox game in Boston. They also visited the Barker Character, Comic & Cartoon Museum & the Comic Book Store in Cheshire. My son and husband took in the New England Air Museum. This spacious house was a fantastic place for us to be all together at and a very comfortable "home away from home". The boys were able to explore the surroundings including the beach & were not restrained the way they would have been had we stayed at a hotel. They were awed with the resident praying mantis. The house is very well equipped with a large fridge with ice-maker, dishwasher and the washer and dryer came in handy. Being somewhat coffee snobs, my son and I were especially pleased to find a coffee grinder as I had brought a pound of coffee beans from home.!! The 2 sinked bathrooms were a big plus and the beds were comfortable!! We had several family dinners in the dinning room. Our daughter and her wedding party came to the house to get ready for the wedding. The hairdresser and make-up artist were there at the same time and were able to set up their work station in separate spaces. We really really enjoyed the huge deck, the stunning views of the river, the morning fog over the river, the fire pit, and even the outside television especially on our last day where we had a gathering of a few relatives who hadn't left for home yet. Also of note is the quiet, the privacy and distance away from the main road this property provides. We were surprised at how trusting and easy going Dean the owner was. He came to see us the first morning we were there to give us a quick overview of the house and one other time when he was taking his boat out for a spin. I am so thankful our daughter suggested this VBRO property. Staying in this house has made our stay in East Hampton a super positive experieince and has gone a long way in making a wonderful happy event in our family a precious memory! We would recommend the "River House" without hesitation! We wanted for nothing! Thanks again Dean, The Huck family

Don't Miss this Unique Experience!

5 of 5
My husband and I are from East Windsor, CT. Last November we retired to Florida, knowing our daughter was to be married in South Windsor on September 6, 2014. With various friends and relatives coming for the wedding, we looked for a vacation rental that could accommodate not just us, but our other children, cousins and various friends on various nights. This property could not been more perfect. It is huge, with plenty of room to sleep a crowd! More than that though, it is a charming example of tasteful, high-end mid-century construction and decor which includes family photos that bring you back to to this family's life when the owners lived here years ago with their Mom and Dad. Little seems to have changed since the house was built in 1958, but that makes it all the more fantastic. I was immediately transported back to my childhood during the fifties and sixties. The kitchen is well equipped with retro yet fully functioning appliances including garbage disposal, double oven and dishwasher. There are four separate living spaces, some of which can double as sleeping quarters. Our family and our guests were enchanted by the beauty of this home, including the outdoor terrace, covered porch, stunning front entry, pastoral views and family treasures throughout. The dining room is nothing short of magnificent. The day after the wedding there were nine of us around the antique table having a family breakfast; and that beautiful table could have easily accommodated more. There are bikes and table games and a wonderful yard, all in a quiet country setting that also appears to be unchanged from years ago. I can't comment on the tv as we were all having too much fun to turn it on, but the wifi worked perfectly. My out-of-state company remarked repeatedly how awesome the house would be for a family reunion. We may follow up on that! As a last remark, the owner is pleasant and easy to work with. The day after we left she sent me an email stating she had already mailed us our security deposit. If you like humdrum hotel rooms that all look the same and provide the identical experience time after time, you probably should stick with that when visiting the Hartford area. However, if you want a truly memorable experience for you and your family, pass on hotel and go instead to Eve's Retreat! It is part comfy accommodation, part museum, and part nostalgic trip into the life of a family in an earlier time.

Lovely lake house

5 of 5
We had a wonderful time at this charming lake house. It was the perfect size for just the two of us, with a great view of the lake and a well-appointed kitchen with all the pots, pans and other bits you'll need to cook. We found the property very clean and well-maintained on arrival. It was early in the season and the activity on the lake was quite subdued, which we were thankful for. I did some fishing from the supplied canoe and caught bass and pickerel quite nearby. All in all, it was a great experience and we would not hesitate to return!
