Brilliant vacation for our group

5 of 5
My wife and I recently returned to Hacienda Las Trancas for the third time. Each visit, our groups have rented the entire hacienda for a week, so the experience has been somewhere between a resort and a rental property. I have tried to describe the place and experience to others, but there are no adequate words. For friends who have recently been there with us, there are also no adequate words, but now they understand. We go with people who are like minded – if you're looking for a glitzy 5-star resort with smooth, shiny surfaces, this is not your place. It's 450 years old and full of texture and character. If you prefer authenticity and soul mixed with creativity and care, then it can be as special as you want it to be. It's casual elegance is nice and comfortable – rooms, grounds, food, everything. The staff are real people who you want to take home with you. The somewhat remote location inspires relaxation, but there's also plenty to do – when you include day trips into the must-see cities of Dolores Hidalgo, San Miguel and Guanajuato, the days fly by. Our group of 20 arrived as friends and acquaintances. A week later, we left as family. The hacienda is the kind of place where that can happen. Since returning, we simply laugh and hug one another and try to tell others to trust us.

Super house and staff

5 of 5
We used this as a family retreat for ages 3-91 and found it ideal as a place to relax, paint and enjoy SMA. Several blocks from the main square, it has bedrooms to accommodate almost any situation. Even with 10 of us in residence, it was spacious and comfortable. The mature trees and well tended gardens provide great beauty, dappled sunlight and fresh flowers. The house is very comfortable but not overwrought, and the staff are outstanding including the gardeners. Our special thanks to Oscar for your attentiveness and to Elvia for superb meals and chiles nogadas beyond great, and for their special attention to our children! We had a great retreat - thank you! We look forward to returning to SMA and Las Tortugas!

Light, Bright, Safe and Comfortable

5 of 5
I spent several months in this airy casita belonging to Judy Arnold and David Hernandez. It is a gorgeous property with incredible views from the many windows, and fine gardens filled with flowers. I enjoyed being in a safe home, with dogs and friendly people around. The huge bed is comfortable, towels fluffy, and the kitchen with a view, was well equipped. I appreciated having a blender to make Mexican sauces. There is a new TV, a floor fan for warm nights, plenty of hot water. You walk a steep, but picturesque hill to get up to the house or downtown, but the distance is really not far. Many rentals I looked at were further out... The covered patio overlooking the city was wonderful regardless of time of day. I loved waking up to a view of San Miguel. A recommendation for next time: Use extra bedside table, in living room to bring TV down to eye level...and maybe put high cupboard someplace else. Thank you Judy for a wonderful visit. I hope to return. San Miguel from your hilltop vantage point never looked better.
