Tropical Hilltop Paradise at the End of the Road

4 of 5
Beautiful property in an outstanding location. A little difficult to get to, but that is exactly what we were after. Many options for hiking excursions into the jungle. Secluded with the lakefront a short walk down the hill and the mountain ridges just up the hill. Away from tourist areas yet close to attractions like the Volcano Observatory and SkyTrek Zipline. Small stores and good restaurants conveniently close by (Pizza John's is a must). House was well appointed and property managers just down the hill were readily available and very helpful. Highly recommended are the horseback ride to the hilltop finca and hike down into the gorge to the secret waterfall. Also, just head up hill from the house and keep hiking into the jungle as far as your legs will carry you. When your legs tire of vertical trails walk along the lakeshore from the river crossing at the end of the road. Sights and sounds are incredible.

Skip the resorts and stay here

5 of 5
When looking for a place to stay, I wanted something that could accommodate our group of 8, yet be comfortable and close to modern conveniences. This house fit our needs perfectly and I would definitely stay here again. The property was just as described.... very clean and the provided directions from Mario were invaluable. Since we had a larger group, on the second day Victor brought over an inflatable air mattress for us to use as the bedrooms were all taken. While the house was fully furnished it does not come with a washer and dryer. However, Victor and his wife Maritza were happy to do a couple of loads of laundry for us while we were there. The pool, grill (charcoal), and cabana were great for relaxing and dining and got plenty of use. The gated entrance has a larger parking area on the side of the house, but the gate was just large enough for our Hyundai van, so take note if you have a larger rental vehicle it may not fit through the gate. The town of Coronado is about 15-20 minutes away and features a typical supermarket (Rey) you would find in any American city. We stopped there several times and utilized the grill every night for making our dinners. There is beach access about 1/4 mile away but be aware of the trash that does come in overnight with the tide, especially the ripped in half aluminum cans.

Quiet Mountain Retreat

5 of 5
Thanks to Christopher and Pilly for a wonderful month of country living. Bajos del Toro was quaint, safe, quiet and lovely. Having our coffee on the deck and watching the smoke rise from Poas Volcano was heavenly. Although the chalet is a bit of a drive from touristy attractions, it was ideal for us. We added over 110 new birds to our bird count, enjoyed El Silencio, LaPaz, Arenal, Tabacon Hot Springs, Poas Volcano, Catarata del Toro and the Caribbean lowlands. Beautifully decorated, contemporary home. It was like living in a house straight out of "Architectural Digest". The furnishings were impeccable. Everyone was friendly, helpful and kind with our "Spanglish". Beds were comfortable. Kitchen was well furnished. Take a sweater, it gets a bit chilly.
