It's about the spectacular view!

5 of 5
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and although I did lots of research prior to our trip, I wasn't totally sure what to expect. We arrived in the dark (and it gets dark at 5:30PM) so we couldn't appreciate the perfect setting of Flying Toucans until the next morning. My favorite part of our experience was the privilege of rising at first light and enjoying the sunrise every day (at 5:30 AM)on the balcony, appreciating the glorious colors of the sky as the tides came in and watching the tropical creatures as they came in to visit. Actually, the view is so spectacular at any time of the day with a constant show of wildlife, you will find it very difficult to leave when you have activities planned. This was the rainy season which I didn't fully understand but it was perfect for us -- on most days we didn't see rain until later in the afternoon or evening and when it rained, we quite enjoyed the experience of the tropical downpour. Flying Toucans was perfect for the two couples on our trip and we loved that the living room was actually outside. Even the kitchen shutters opened to take in that gorgeous view of the infinity pool and the Pacific . Clearly the owner’s thought of every detail in design and location, the house manager came to meet us on our arrival in the dark and was a font of information about the area during our stay since he has been a resident for many years; he goes above and beyond to make your stay perfect yet he knows exactly the right balance between being available and giving you your privacy . We took a side trip to Manuel Antonio one day which we thoroughly enjoyed (the benefit of traveling to Costa Rica in the rainy season, is the crowds are much smaller). When we returned to Flying Toucans that evening after walking on every available trail, climbing every step and seeing lots of wildlife, the grounds person surprised us all with a Pipa Fria which I think was the most refreshing beverage I have ever tasted! Having a cell phone for local phone calls was a nice feature and since we turned our USA phones off except for Wifi, it was something we found very useful -- thank you! All in all, Flying Toucans made our first visit to Costa Rica, one we will never forget and we highly recommend this property. It really was paradise!

Relaxed at Casa Roja

5 of 5
My family of five hada wonderful stay at Casa Roja in October . The property is private and beautifully maintained. It was great to have a car and explore all the beaches around the area : Playa Coco , Maderas , Gigante , Yankee and SJDS. All are worth visiting and exploring but then it was lovely to return to the peace of Casa Roja and enjoying the views, and listen to the birds and monkeys in the trees. Luis the property manager was most helpful and welcoming and Fred the owner was very helpful with questions and planning our trip, prior to arrival. Fred , you have a fabulous place in paradise and we are thankful that you shared your home with us. We would recommend it to any family or group seeking a Nicaraguan adventure in paradise.

Wonderful relaxing get-a-way

5 of 5
Upon arrival in San Pedro we were promptly met by Ernesto (caretaker) for a short boat ride to 18 Degrees N. Ernesto is a very helpful guide of the area and was attentive to all of our needs. Samantha (caretaker) cooked us fresh Lobster two of our nights which was delicious. We went by boat on short ride off dock and Ernesto dove down to collect fresh conch and later that evening we had fresh ceviche prepared by Ernesto, which was the best I have ever tasted. It also was great just watching him getting the conch out of shell. The weather was wonderful and even the rain we had one day was welcome to cool the breeze. It was beautiful just to see the storm clouds over the water. It did not hamper any of our adventures. Gorgeous sunrise can be seen from the beach house. If you walk a short distance down beach at the resort of X'tan Ha you can see the other side of island and view spectacular sunsets. We ate there one night and had the hamburger which we should of shared. Just off the end of the dock we snorkeled and saw stingrays (under dock) and several tropical fish and some coral. Just a short boat ride out from the dock is the reef which more tropical fish and coral and stingrays can be seen. We went into the town of San Pedro which is a boat ride by Ernesto and went to various restaurants including, Fido's, Estel's by the sea, Caroline's (across from airport), Wild Mangos and all were excellent. I am not sure you can get a bad meal anywhere on the island. Also visited an out of the way Karaoke bar with a host of local characters, lots of fun and great sound system. A must visit is Wahoo's Lounge to see the famous "Chicken Drop" which was held on Thursday. Also, must eat a "Fry Jack" while there. If you have to ask what that is (which we did), then this is a MUST. I definitely recommend 18 Degrees N to stay at while in Ambergris Caye because of the beauty, quite, beach, fresh water pool and reef close by just to name a few amenities. Ernesto is there at all times to take you on any tour and boat you into town. If you do not want to cook you have Samantha there to prepare you dinner. We stayed 5 nights and wish we could of stayed longer. Will stay at 18 Degrees N the next time to Ambergris Caye.
