STOP HUNTING, JUST RENT THIS VILLA FOR YOUR TRIP.

5 of 5
We (three guys & two girls) traveled from Wisconsin for a wedding and were overwhelmed by the kindness of the locals and the perfection of Casa Barba Roja. We enjoyed the company of several lizards, including Iggy and Lizzy (the boys fed Lizzy a beetle and excitement ensued); we didn't know iguanas could climb trees! We also met a sloth at the house, but he was shy. The pool was a huge highlight in our downtime, with the incredible view and perfect temperature. Josue and Roxana were wonderful and on hand whenever needed. The house is in walking distance of several restaurants/bars and a happy downhill hike to the beach. Cabs are easy to catch, and incredibly quick if you call them. The grocery store delivers! Don't look any further; just rent this house.

1 MONTH WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

5 of 5
My family and I recently returned from a month-long stay at Casa Roja. It is as beautiful and interesting as the pictures and description state. We are a family of four with two small children and had guests join us on and off throughout our stay. I believe the house will appeal most to well traveled folks who appreciate and like being off the beaten path a bit. The five stars are given because of the lovely grounds, pool, great staff, stunning views (on clear days) and the remote wildness which appeals to me. The house does have some draw-backs and they should be noted, not to discourage visitors but to have a better idea of the pros and cons and if this is the best fit for you as a traveler. There are bugs, lots of them and this is coming from a very non-squmish women who has lived in Africa. My only advice is to get over it. You are in the jungle and this is their territory. Buy a book of native insects and let budding entomologist do their thing. There are four dogs on property, all are sweet and loving but you must like dogs to enjoy your stay here. At night when the world around you gets very dark and the chorus of wild sounds emerge I enjoyed having the dogs around. The house is a good 15 minutes from town, a car is a must and you will enjoy your stay more if you come with a bit of a food plan in mind. San Juan has lots of bars and restaurants and many have nightly specials and happy hours, early in your stay get to know the best deals and work your evening plans around them. Sanchez is a little corner store in town (two locations) and you can pick up most of your groceries there (you will pay slightly more than at the big super market, but the super market is a bit sparse). We took a few side trips and it was a real treat to pack a small overnight bag and leave the big suitcases at Casa Roja. I highly recommend Ometepe (Hotel Villa Paraiso) and Granada (La Gran Francia), 2-3 nights in each location should give you a good look around. We loved our adventure in Nica and hope to return!

FABULOUS VIEWS & PERFECT LOCATION!

5 of 5
I can't say enough positive things about Storm & Amy's villa. It is exactly as advertised, kitchen is well-stocked, including decent bath & beach towels (none of those tiny, scratchy white ones here!). The views are amazing, I could have sat out on the deck all day but there were too many fun things to do in the area. We saw toucans, monkeys, lizards and tons of other birds right from the deck. We also hiked farther up the road into the rainforest early in the morning and saw lots of poison dart frogs. Having a private pool was fantastic - our kids could swim as much as they liked while we were making meals or whatever, instead of a community pool where we'd have to chaperone them. Amy & Storm left us with several suggestions on beaches / restaurants, as well as recommendations for activities. Highly recommend Sunset Surf for surf lessons & the Nauyaca Falls horseback trip. I would stick with the beaches they recommend, they were all great. One day we went to the Marino Ballena National Park beach (which was not on their list). Although the beach was visually awesome, the vibe there was a little unpleasant - police patrolling the beach and some locals eyeing our stuff a little too closely. There are too many other nice beaches that are free with a more relaxed vibe. Playa Ventanas was awesome, be prepared to pay a German guy who lives there about $5 to park, but it's worth it. The villa has 3 AC units, one in each bedroom and one on the main level, so we found that we only needed to run the bedroom ACs at night, the rest of the time, we could just open the doors & windows. The location is fantastic, walking distance to Dominicalito beach and a waterfall with a swimming hole, and just a short drive to other beaches & restaurants. We ate at several of the restaurants Amy & Storm recommended, including their own Jolly Roger (great, friendly staff & awesome views!), Tortilla Flats, PorQueNo, La Parcela and Sabor Espanol to name a few. It is the tropics and sometimes things don't work as consistently as in the US (water, power, WIFI, etc), but the few minor occurrences didn't impact our trip. I've lived and worked in a lot of tourist destinations and I can honestly say the local population in this part of CR is friendlier and more laid back than anywhere else I've traveled. They truly are living the Pura Vida!
