Five long time friends and family just returned from a fabulous two weeks in Nicaragua. The highlight was the five days at Casa Roja and we wished we had planned for more time there! (But for those of you who plan to get out and about beyond San Juan, I strongly suggest a stay at Hotel Totoco Ecolodge in Ometepe Island).
Casa Roja is gorgeous! All the reviews have said it before but I'll again share some of what I see as the highlights. It is sooo peaceful and quiet. Yes, it's a drive to town and the beaches, but you hardly want to leave the place and go anywhere else. Waking up and taking in the view - -lush landscaping, thick and green and tropical and mountainous with the Pacific off in the distance along with Costa Rica - along with a dip in the pool, and a hot cup of coffee (prepared by Luis everyday it seems), tells you that you are totally on vacation. Hanging out all day, reading and napping in hammocks in the palapa with a view, and playing with the dogs and perhaps getting a massage is complete R&R. The design of the house --with three separate structures, each decorated tastefully with collections from Fred's worldwide travels - gives you as much privacy or as much group time as you want. Luis (and his sweet family) - the cuidador and all around amazing gardener, caretaker, helper, friend - is the sweetest guy on the planet. Fred is just a phone call away and will meet any and all needs before you leave, or while you are there, with efficiency, humor and tales of Nicaraguan adventures. Indie, Jedi, Toby and puppy Luca are the four sweetest, kindest, cleanest dogs you'll ever meet! They become the best pals and each with a different personality. Evenings are a wonderful time to light up the BBQ, dance in the moon/starlight by the pool, drink some great rum, sing out loud (no one can hear you out here!), or just enjoy the perfect nightime peace and quiet and warm weather as you swing back and forth in your hammock swing. You'll sleep like a baby and be oh so glad that you found Casa Roja. (PS. I suggest a visit to Playa Coco and Ziplining is a blast!). Buen viaje and thank you Fred and Luis!
