1 MONTH WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

5 of 5
My family and I recently returned from a month-long stay at Casa Roja. It is as beautiful and interesting as the pictures and description state. We are a family of four with two small children and had guests join us on and off throughout our stay. I believe the house will appeal most to well traveled folks who appreciate and like being off the beaten path a bit. The five stars are given because of the lovely grounds, pool, great staff, stunning views (on clear days) and the remote wildness which appeals to me. The house does have some draw-backs and they should be noted, not to discourage visitors but to have a better idea of the pros and cons and if this is the best fit for you as a traveler. There are bugs, lots of them and this is coming from a very non-squmish women who has lived in Africa. My only advice is to get over it. You are in the jungle and this is their territory. Buy a book of native insects and let budding entomologist do their thing. There are four dogs on property, all are sweet and loving but you must like dogs to enjoy your stay here. At night when the world around you gets very dark and the chorus of wild sounds emerge I enjoyed having the dogs around. The house is a good 15 minutes from town, a car is a must and you will enjoy your stay more if you come with a bit of a food plan in mind. San Juan has lots of bars and restaurants and many have nightly specials and happy hours, early in your stay get to know the best deals and work your evening plans around them. Sanchez is a little corner store in town (two locations) and you can pick up most of your groceries there (you will pay slightly more than at the big super market, but the super market is a bit sparse). We took a few side trips and it was a real treat to pack a small overnight bag and leave the big suitcases at Casa Roja. I highly recommend Ometepe (Hotel Villa Paraiso) and Granada (La Gran Francia), 2-3 nights in each location should give you a good look around. We loved our adventure in Nica and hope to return!

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!

5 of 5
I came with my family and 3 of their friends, so there were 8 of us and we couldn't have had a better stay. The location is fantastic, with the Pacific Ocean on one side of the property and an estuary on the other side. Walk out of the house, turn right and walk a little bit on the wide open beach and you come to the "bocana" or mouth where the ocean and estuary meet. It's an incredible piece of nature. The house itself fit our needs perfectly. The kids all stayed in the large room and had a blast together, while my wife and I enjoyed our privacy in a luxurious room with a modern bathroom design. The main gathering points were either on the ocean side out front by the pool under a spacious rancho or in the middle of the property where there is a sunken outdoor "living room". Daniel, the owner, was extremely helpful before and during our stay - giving us tips on what to do and was very accommodating. The couple that takes care of the place on a day to day basis, Chamba and Morena, couldn't have been sweeter. They were always available for any of our needs, but never intruded on our privacy. There are all kinds of things to do and we tried to do as many as we could. Of course we went in the warm ocean and lounged by the pool, but we also went water skiing, kayaking and one night went in the mangroves for a sunset dinner on one of the local floating "ranchitas". The house and grounds are kept spotless by Chamba and Morena. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone! We will come again!

A GEM

5 of 5
The house could not be more perfectly placed, being tucked back just a tad from the beach on a river that creates beautiful sculptures in the sand as it enters the ocean. The sunsets are an event. Relax by the pool as toucans fly by, squawking, making you feel like you're in a Sesame Street episode, the letter L in primary colors overhead. Walk the beach into town or catch a ridiculously cheap cab. The house was clean, secure, and fully equipped. Beds were comfortable, shower was hot, although there aren't scald guards on the faucets. Kitchen is fully equipped, and the owner and manager are receptive to suggestions. Grocery store is a fifteen minute walk if you want to cook. There is a resort with a good menu next door if you'd rather eat at a table right next to the beach. We apparently were the first renters here and we will definitely stay here again.
