fantastic property and location

5 of 5
There was very little we didn't love about the place. The location is pretty much ideal. It's about half-way between Montezuma and Cabuya, both of which have great restaurants and other stuff to do, but far enough away to feel secluded. There are at least two nice beaches right by the property, as well as a fantastic river with swimming holes and waterfalls. The area is full of wildlife, with monkeys, coatis, anteaters, armadillos and much more visiting regularly. The property itself is huge and includes cows, pigs, chicken, giant tropical trees, a wood shop and more. We spend a good day just exploring inside the fence. The two caretakers were always friendly and helpful, but discreet. We didn't feel "observed", on the contrary, they made our stay more pleasant. We were able to get fresh eggs, cheese and milk from them, as well as some bikes to make getting around easier. I also got a few lessons on picking and chopping the coconuts that grow on the property. There is also a fellow Canadian running the wood shop. It was far enough away from the main house that it never bothered us, and he is a great resource for local info. The house was clean and well stocked. We cooked our own meals and lacked nothing. The layout is fantastic, three adjacent rooms with a shared common area in the middle that includes the kitchen. We also spend a lot of time just sitting around the yard/porch area at night. There is some air condition available, but we didn't use it. The first few nights were hot, but with the fan and the slotted windows, we adjusted quickly and it didn't bother us after a few days. We never met Jan, but we communicated by phone and e-mail. He was always very helpful and prompt to reply. It felt good knowing that he was on the ball and we didn't have to worry about anything. The two dogs deserve special mention. The older one looks and acts more like a lion than a dog, but is very sweet. The young one is a bit of a crazy puppy, but once he warms up to you, he's a adorable. They might look a bit scary, but they're really very nice and love going for walks. Just be sure you have a good grip on the leash. We stayed for about 5 weeks, and loved every minute of it. The place quickly felt like home and I wish I was there right now. If possibly, we'll definitely be back.

A REAL Get Away!

5 of 5
Our stay at Rancho Montecito was outstanding. Debbie was great to work with. Bryana was a great hostess and provided great suggestions for things to do in the area, great conversation and sincere interest in our stay. Jacinto was a great guide and field manager - I enjoyed our Spanish lessons while on horseback (THANKS FOR FINDING MY LOST PHONE!!!). What we enjoyed most about our stay was the tranquility of the area, the beautiful large property, the modern amenities, our cattle drive, and the magnificent views one can see at the top of the property's mountain. My family enjoyed the pool and the cooking quarters - A FULL KITCHEN!!!. We recommend this property to large or small groups who want to get away from it all. You will need a 4x4 to get to the property and a vehicle if you want to go into town. This location is also a great central point to many other Costa Rican attractions such as Manuel Antonio, the nearby volcano Poas and major cities such as San Jose, Atenas, and Alajuela.
